Thread regarding University of Phoenix layoffs

To Quality of Students,

Entrance exams are not a true indicator of a student’s potential. For example, in the past entrance exams were used to keep people of a certain gender, or race, or religion out of school. When these schools found that students of the preferred group could not pass the entrance exams, many school initiated a policy of waiving the entrance exam requirement on a case-by-case basis while still demanding the requirement on the “undesirable” students. In addition, failure at another university does affect a student’s admittance to UoP. For instance, although UoP does not publicly broadcast this fact, transcripts from a student’s previous school is a requirement for admittance into UoP. Students who performed poorly at a previous school or who were academic disqualified are required to file a written appeal requesting acceptance into UoP. The majority of those appeals are denied. I believe UoP does not want this fact known because it might turn away potential students. Finally, traditional schools face many of the same dilemmas as online schools. Traditional schools do not know who is actually writing a student’s papers. For instance, in the movie PCU, one of the main characters generates a small income selling pre-written term papers. Although I do not believe plagiarizing or deceitful students are as prevalent as presented in the movie, dishonest students pose a problem for any institution, not just UoP.
