Thread regarding Follett layoffs

RE: 3665- It IS management's job to anticipate retail trends!

Yes, those of us on this board are critical of management. Amazon wasn't a top secret plan unveiled in 2010! The students have been congregating around booklists and comparing prices for years! At Stanford, students actually complained on Yelp about the lack of wireless connectivity from the text book floor. How were they supposed to compare prices? Additionally, why were students allowed to buy and use a new book for a week while they waited for their "real" book to come in from one of Amazon's retailers. There used to be reshelving fees that at least covered costs! Follet negotiated those away, too (another function of management). Follett should have had leveraged their size and negotiated with publishers to equalize the advantage Amazon retailers have. That's a management task.

Follett should have strictly managed their store managers. At Stanford, the Director of Stores has been a one man wrecking crew doling out abuse until experienced staff quit (many without other jobs). Veterans who chose to tough it out have been laid of by Follett directly.

Follett's management has acted as if they're executing a well devised plan to slow down and break up this company.
