Thread regarding University of Phoenix layoffs

Obama Reform and Apollo Group Resistance

I' sure Apollo Group's PR people are working overtime trying to get the public to believe that government oversight of FPEs is a bad thing. President Obama is giving University of Phoenix and other for-profits two years (2016)to get a judge to overturn any executive order....http://www.njherald.com/story/24972184/rule-targets-for-profit-colleges-over-student-debt

Incidentally, I am completely in favor of UOP adopting admissions standards rather than it's current open enrollment posture. It would translate to fewer new students, however it might translate to students that could actually be successful in college.

No, you are wrong. I am neither upper management nor am I an underling. I am, however, someone who would like you to address my question… particularly as it relates to personal responsibility.

Schools certainly can do more. ALL schools.

I am not for taking advantage of people. QUITE the opposite. But I'm also quite sick of the excuse that people have no role in what they agree to on multiple applications and presumably read prior to stopping their classes as soon as the financial aid check comes in.

Some of the specious arguments here are coming from upper management (or are being parroted by their underlings). The truth is that University of Phoenix is a "red flag" school. That means that its default rate is higher than its graduation rate. Yes there are some public schools that have default rates, but UoP has one of the worst records. Ben Miller's article about gainful employment is particularly compelling....http://www.newamerica.net/sites/newamerica.net/files/policydocs/Improving%20Gainful%20Employment%20FINAL.pdf

They need to take that funding away. This funding, goes directly to profiting everyone but the "student". The "student" then pays for years and years. It's such a scam. Why has nobody done anything about this????

The charts at the bottom of this article are also quite interesting. Undoubtedly there is a huge problem. But the problem is across the board. Target equally and also recognize that people are signing a legal document indicating that they will repay and then defaulting when they take out federal financial aid. That is not wholly the fault of schools, unless we are in the business of believing there is no personal responsibility for individuals.

Camden Kid have you researched the default rates at public (tax payer subsidized) schools and community colleges?

Please define "legitimate" schools.

Where are you getting that statistic from?

This ain't no joke. $30,000,000,000 to $40,000,000,000 of US taxpayer funds funneled each year to for-profits; money that could go to more legitimate schools. And many of FP victims left in debt peonage: unable to ever pay off these loans.
