This is how lame some management is. Besides getting co workers to go against each other they employ people outside the company such as consultants, vendors, and customers in their tactics. No matter how close you are to a customer or vendor do you really want to show them how unethical you are and that you can't handle your business honestly? It's all surreal sometimes.

My manager is trying to pitch my co-worker and I against one another. Weak strategy.
@7196 It seems like all the managers are coached in that tactic. It must have been a training they all received at one of those off site manager meetings. LOL I too have seen it happen. The managers I've seen do it have also been the ones who are always the favorites.
Don't go to HR unless you want you problem to intensify.

How about the managers who lack integrity by lying to you and about you, talking about you to others around the office to paint a bad picture, and try to rid you because you really know how deceitful they are. These are the ones who have proven to be slim balls, insecure and feel threatened. Losers!
Talk about a bunch of fools! Imagine a slimy "consultant" placing a sales call into a brainless manager's office. "If I could save you $2M/year for a one time cost of $500K, would you be interested?". Mentally challenged manager, "uh, I guess". Sleaziod sales person, "We have experience reviewing the roles of companies like yours and we reposition the titles into lower paying job descriptions. We'll issue a report that shows you pay too much in incentive bonuses. We'll write a report, too, that demonstrates that executive pay should increase based on a reward for cost cutting model. May we come in a present to your leadership sample reports and results next week". Barely human manager, "Sure!". Books appt. Then calls spouse, "honey, we have the money for a Exotic vacation!".
