Thread regarding Corinthian Colleges Inc. layoffs

Can you believe that there are responsibilities for those taking UNPAID TIME OFF?

Delusional Program Director sent out expectations that instructors with UNPAID time off do the following: REQUIRED: Grade Late Work (within 48 hours) and reply to administrative e-mails (within 24 hours). SUGGESTED: Monitor student e-mails and do outreach.

Which part of UNPAID does this PD not understand? If instructors are forced to take time off without compensation that means they are free from responsibilities. Any work they are required to do, even if having to login to courses or e-mails, constitutes work that they should be paid for. Seriously delusional management at this place.

That's your PD. Our PD thinks he is above the law apparently.

Our PD told us if we took the unpaid time off, we would NOT be expected to log on all week.

If students turn in late assignments from Week 1 all the way in Week 11, then yeah, they can wait for me to grade. 48 hours for faculty to grade these loser's crap assignments from over 2 months ago, when they should be dropped is again rewarding student behavior and treating faculty like shit.

That's funny that students can turn it I. Late, but damn, get that grading done. How about they wait then?

No, the grading is for LATE work only, and with the joke late work policy they have, that can be significant if the students are on the brink of losing their stipend checks for non-attendance.

It actually sounds like they aren't planning on having subs in the classes. If they were, why wouldn't they do the grading?

If they want to fire me for not doing work on my unpaid time off, then go right ahead and I will bring it to the Labor Board since laws were violated. I will be doing them a favor by taking the a week off without pay, and they are still getting the classes monitored by a full-time faculty member (no work time loss for them - they just don't have to pay one of us). So they can comply or I will sue them.

This is funny. What will they do if you don't grade within 48 and respond within 24 hours? Will they fire you? Tell them, not to threaten you with a good time.

You should forward that email to Fitzgerald and Owen and ask them to clarify what unpaid leave means. They may not reply directly, but you can be sure that any work expectation will be removed.

Well, we can't contact Ken Ord, the dumbass that sent the e-mail about the 10% reductions and unpaid week memos. He has passed questions we may have to others (see end of his heartfelt BS statement). "We regret any hardship these reductions may create for you or your family. As the company makes this transition, your understanding and cooperation are greatly appreciated – as is your ongoing commitment to our mission of changing students’ lives. Thank you. If you have any questions about the above, please ask your Campus President, department head or HR leader."

Ken Ord, Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer

Everybody needs to report this to Bob. They can't have it both ways, plus there are legalities to expecting employees to take unpaid time off yet still being forced to work. And they know it. I know I saw something in an email about NOT working if you have off. Either way, if you do log in or work while you are on unpaid time off, that could get them in VERY big trouble.

According to the PD, this is still "unofficial", but they needed something as a guide. If this gets approved and becomes official, I will be reporting it to Bob.

I'm wrong. It wasn't in an email from Bob. It was from somewhere though.

It says in the original email from Bob that students are not to do any work during unpaid time off. If you work, they HAVE to pay you. That's the law. I would find that passage from the email and send it to that person. Or email Bob and tell him what you were told. If you are to take off unpaid, don't work.
