Thread regarding Corinthian Colleges Inc. layoffs

For those of you who think you might be working TWO weeks without pay.

Let me remind you there is a one week lag, so you might be working THREE weeks without pay.

I'm trying to be prepared, so I just called our labor office (GA). Here, you can appeal to have your unemployment back-dated, but certainly the earlier you file the better. You cannot file for a period when you are working, but they did tell me that failure to receive a paycheck is qualifying.

In other words, your unemployment benefit should be back dated to the day you stopped getting paid, since you legitimately expected to be paid for work performed. Also you don't have to file the same day, there is a period of time to file, like a week or something, but you must file right away. So if you are not paid June 27, you file the week of June 29, and ask that your benefits begin the week of June 8, since you reported and expected to be paid.

Each state has its own rules regarding unemployment, but I bet working without getting paid is a legitimate reason to file late.

Also they will scare you into thinking if you're fired for performance you will not get unemployment. I was told this morning that in TX that they can deny you for misconduct but production/performance does not constitute misconduct.

Make sure you apply for unemployment ASAP (same day) that you don't receive your paycheck. Plan for this. It probably varies by state, but generally you can't collect unemployment for any dates prior to your application.

A wage claim can be filed after 180 days if you're not paid in TX

"I'm just wondering why there hasn't been clear, consistent, company-wide communications on what's going on." Upper management wants you all to believe that "everything is fine" and "the company has plenty of cash." Believe whatever you want, but why has the stock gone down to ~30 cents when it once was about $20.00? Just in the last year the stock has lost about 90% of its value. Either investors are dumb, and you should buy management's story and the stock, or the investment community is smarter than management. You decide. By the way, what's happening at your campus to make you think the company is strong? Anything going on to make you think the operation might have significant problems?

If you're wondering why there hasn't been clear, consistent communication about this, I'm guessing you haven't worked for CCi for very long. They've never been any good at communicating with their employees and situating the company within the wider regulatory context. This is just typical. I'll bet that employees (including my girlfriend) won't know if they're getting paid or not until Friday, when their direct deposit either does or does not show up.

I quit almost a month ago, and HR has said twice that my check is in the mail. I do not expect to get it, and my suggestion would be, if you find yourself in similar circumstances, file a claim with the labor board. Let them handle it.

Are we the only ones being left in the dark? Who is actually being told that there might not be a 6-27 payroll? Campuses? Corporate? I don't doubt at all that we might not get paid. I'm just wondering why there hasn't been clear, consistent, company-wide communications on what's going on. You kind of expect that when we're seeing what we're seeing in the press.

Anonymous12830, in a meeting YESTERDAY, people were told by MANAGEMENT that they cannot say whether or not everyone will be paid next week. This is not a rumor on this website.

Incorrect. The employees were asked to work for free for up to 21 days...

You obviously don't know how dire the "may not continue as a going concern" announcement is. Go look up the history on companies that fire that shot.

Please remember that not getting paid is just a rumor that seems to have started on this site. The company's situation isn't quite that dire, so for now there's no benefit to panicking. Just keep showing up at work, see what happens, and polish up your resume while we're all waiting to see. Maybe some people are making a mountain out of a molehill.
