Thread regarding Education Management Corporation layoffs

All Workers (and Especially Managers) Need to Speak Out

Anonymous29278, Managers have to be more than nice. They need to be principled and they need to resist actions that are unethical (and possibly illegal). EDMC is facing the consequences of failing to listen to principled employees and students who care about their degrees. The prof who came out about EDMC and the Art Institutes (Lorna Hernandez) was courageous--and that's what EDMC needs more.......http://www.huffingtonpost.com/davidhalperin/edmc-professors-and-stude_b_1909449.html

Management take a stand on principles against their employer? You Must Be Joking! There have been many professors that have stepped up to the plate and put their job on the line regarding unethical practices. They usually get fired or pushed out, some make it into the news. How many mangers have done that? Oh that's right, none. They are all bottom feeders like the one at the bottom of this thread who makes excuses about being at peace with himself working for the devil while simultaneously slamming his underlings. Hear no evil, speak no evil, out of my hands kind of guy perpetuating the problems, all not his fault of coarse.

Saying you would live by your principles if only life were perfect and had no bills is what every shumck says to himself. In fact, living by ones principles is by definition is a sacrifice to live that way. Justifying the violation of principles for cash just means you are a sell out. This is why corporate management is frequently so toxic.

I don't believe EDMC will close. I do believe they will downsize considerably. What are your thoughts? What do you base your opinion on? Please enlighten us.

I come here only to laugh @ all the idiots worrying themselves sick. EDMC won't close. Camden won't suddenly like girls. Nothing is going to change.

Like it or not, this page had almost 200 views and people are posting here. I've been lurking here since March, we had no posts on this page while UOP was on fire, also Corinthian. It looks like our folks are starting to frequent the page. So, Camden is right, people want to know and want to share what they know. The more people bitch about him, the more dialogue they create...

29357: I have no problem with Camden and his opinions and posts, in fact, he is an engine that drives the conversation here. For those of you who obnoxiously slam him - I hate to inform you, but your efforts make you look ignorant and juvenile, and conversely, make him appear unfairly targeted and therefore in the right. BY all means disagree, but if you do it in a mature and professional manner your posts will carry more weight :-)

@Anonymous29344, I know the feeling. I worked for "the devil" (the $tate prison system) for seven years. But as I found out more about how it all worked, as an organ of injustice, it ate me up mentally and physically. There were many good people working there, but it wasn't enough to assuage my guilt. I resisted at several points, then quit and shared my stories. I do feel sorry for people who believe they are principled but who have found that they have to work for an enterprise that they cannot honestly respect. I hope that they will resist in some form.

Principles and ethics are great if you: Have another job lined up. Have the mortgage paid off. Have no kids depending on you to provide food, shelter, school supplies. Have a nice 401k to fall back upon. Otherwise I work for the devil and make my peace with it as best I can. Having said that, as a manager, nothing is going on in my sphere that wouldn't pass accreditation. In fact, a large part of my job is making sure students get their money's worth by assuring that faculty are doing their job. And ironically, I take the heat for that from some disgruntled faculty who are incompetent and feel entitled - I call it the ivory tower syndrome and I've encountered it at pretty much all schools I've worked at. A manager will always be a target and will be attacked using things taken out of context. It's tricky, this managing thing, and one thing I keep learning is that you can't trust anyone, especially your friendly coworkers. Keep it objective, fair, and shut it down at the end of the day and focus on family, outdoor activities, professional goals. You know what? Even though I get paid to do a job, it's not my company. I may implement policy, but I didn't make it. And until I win the lottery or get a better job, I do it and I do it as best I can. BTW, the job market SUCKS out there. Working for the devil is better than no work at all.
