They are not only on site for protection but as a deterrent as well as giving peace of mind. They are also a welcome sight when issues come up. They also give a secure feeling to new enrollees. Helping enrollment by showing the students safety is important to the school.

Why hire Security Officers, Academic PD's are fulfilling that role now!!!!
I'm not sure what campus you're on, but from my experience that wouldn't be a good idea. Thinking about our students and our current security guards, I'd be worried that they'd be from different gangs. It could turn into a war zone here.
