Thread regarding Staples Inc. layoffs

Is working off of the clock rampant in other stores?

I will not post any identifying information here so please do not ask. I am asking if working off of the clock has become common place in other stores? Several people in my store have been coerced into working off of the clock for hours. The tactics used to coerce are that if we want to keep our jobs we have to run a profitable and clean store, if we don't make our numbers the store will be slated to close, we're lucky to have a job, such and such store closed because the team wasn't committed, if we don't stay under our payroll we will be deemed unprofitable. If it has become rampant in other areas I personally think we should organize a class action suit. I have kept track of all the hours that I have "donated". And to the people talking about defecating on the floor you truly are discrediting the legitimate posts and posters here.

I'd make sure I report this - cannot ghost hours, legally you are responsible for reporting actual hours worked

More shit on the floor this morning. Just resigned and was walked out after refusing to clean it up before clocking in. Wasn't me but our SM accused a bunch of us, me included. Am applying at McD's for a better life.

You must report this to the labor board! Back in the day when Staples did the right thing one of my managers was fired immediately after it was reported to the labor board. More than one employee corroborated the story and action was immediately taken. Don't let this pass you by. The stores are going to close if they make their numbers or not. The management just wants to keep you as long as possible until Staples closes. Unless Staples merges with another company I don't see how long they can last. The bad public relations with their layoffs are going to be enough to topple this retail giant. Staples was horrendous in the years that I worked there....however if you are fired for reporting working off the clock see a lawyer, get advice ....do something ..but for crying out loud...don't work for free and let your managers get away with it. If you are injured on the job at one point, you'll have no way to collect unemployment or disability because the labor board is going to ask about the hours you have worked.

"Hey did you know there's a website where people are talking about all the Staples scandals?" "No, what site?" "The layoff.com/staples, they are talking about reporting fraudulent and unethical workplace activity." "Oh, I'll check it out, cause we need to do something, it's getting ridiculous!"

Anonymous45650 - punch in when you start working. If your manager says anything, record it and call HR. What if you got hurt between 7-8am? Oh, Anonymous45650 was not here, it's not a worker's comp issue.....

Working off the clock is very illegal! If you are working off the clock, report these ass holes! Call OSHA, call the dept of labor, call the local news agency! Don't be afraid! The law is on your side!

Any manager having/knowing associates are working off the clock should be reported to H.R....this is NOT negotiable...and against the law in every state. ..even if you can't finish your job in your hours....no...no working off the clock!!!!

To help with labor budget for our store we cannot clock in until the store opens even though we get there an hour earlier. Lately we have one of the shit bandits in our store so I get to clean crap on floor for free. About to quit and go to McD's if I have to.

Yeah, don't let your local management try and pull some bullshit hypothetical on you that "we need to work extra off the clock in order to make sure the work gets done and we remain within labor budget". It's just flat-out wrong, and violates labor laws to ask an hourly employee to work off the clock. If you get injured at work and you're working off the clock, you're not in a good position. If you're an hourly employee, refuse to work unless you're being paid. Make sure you take all your breaks and your meal period. It's just like Anonymous45458 said: if you are an hourly employee and are asked to work off the clock, make sure you report it to HR (ideally via e-mail and retain all e-mail correspondence). Don't do it. It's totally illogical to have the rationale that a store needs associates working off the clock to get the job done within budget. If that's the only way the store can make its numbers, the store might as well shut down, because it's dishonest and not even an accurate metric if the numbers are being manipulated like that.

working off the clock is very common in my store. My team supervisors are the only managers who actually do something and they have to do that all the time unfortunately. Myself as TCE have to do it. To fix computers because my GM won't hire any other techs

As a long time employee for over a decade who has been silently cleaning up random piles of feces before opening the store each morning for the last 6 months I agree we shouldn't give those bastards the satisfaction of talking about it. Is a f'n shame that people would do this and if I ever catch them I am probably going to jail for murder. We are better than this. The stench of our stores isn't going to help things people.

No, just... F'in NO!!!! Don't do it!!!! For years I came in early when I was closing and/or stayed late on opening/mid shifts to catch up on MAP, training, to prepare deposits and coin orders (because the damn SSM would NEVER do them. I did this to basically get all he BS aside so I could focus on running the business during my scheduled shift. Let me tell it it is not worth it or appreciated... If you are asked or told to work off the clock call HR. If they do not do anything then use the voice recorder on your phone to catch them telling you to.

Staples is not worth it...They are PURPOSELY causing these issues and it is almost like a suicide. More like a murder suicide because they are ruining many lives in the course they have set.

Were your fellow associates working off of the clock? If so direct them here so we can start to gather and discuss this. The fact is that we are getting pressured into doing more with less and then having our jobs threatened if we don't accomplish a ridiculous amount. I completely understand that there are associates that are dead weight and dragging other people down, but those associates aren't generally the ones being forced into working the $0/hr overtime.
