Thread regarding Target Corp. layoffs

So, what does this say about TTS?

Target Buys Pittsburgh Shopping Technology Firm

Target Corp. has acquired a Pittsburgh company that says its software platform brings "an Amazon-like shopping experience" to in-store customers.

Powered Analytics co-founder Collin Otis and a spokesman for Minneapolis, Minnesota-based Target confirmed the deal Wednesday. Terms were not disclosed.

Otis says the firm, founded in 2012, will remain headquartered in Pittsburgh.

Powered Analytics' Fabric product uses mobile technology, location data and machine learning to connect a retailer's app to the in-store shopping experience.

The system uses the store's layout and product locations to deliver customized recommendations and messaging to customers.

Doesn't target . Com also run on a platform, I believe primarily IBM. It is just heavily customized. Target will do the same thing with this new tool and have the same problems.

"Target doesn't have to develop it (probably poorly) in house"

I couldn't have said it better myself. TTS developing an app from scratch usually results in disaster. RedRx anyone?

I worked in that space in TTS, so I know how difficult and complex it is. Just funny with the idea of creating the new .com and now purchasing something instead of rebuild a portion of it...perhaps and admission that it cannot be done without a lot of help.

The website is much more complex if you understand the space.

What this story actually is saying is "Target is going to buy the software from someone who has already figured it out so A) Target doesn't have to develop it (probably poorly) in house, and B) competition won't be able to buy it. It's smarter to spend millions and have a working feature than spending millions and having a piece of crap product (like the initial website launch).

Target is buying the technology, not employees. They will probably keep the execs and managers and actual coders/developers will be let to and the work done at Target India.
