Mission Forsaken: The University of Phoenix Affair with Wall Street

Who has read John D. Murphy’s new book “The University of Phoenix: Mission Forsaken”? A review of the book appeared on Yahoo Finance. Below is an excerpt from that article. To read the full article visit: http://finance.yahoo.com/news/mission-forsaken-university-phoenix-affair-130000625.html According to the Yahoo article the book is “Dedicated to the ‘hundreds of thousands of University of Phoenix working adult graduates who have been subjected to the scandal-ridden decline in the well-earned reputation and standing of their alma mater, . . . " “Mission Forsaken reads like a novel as it lays out a visionary educational utopia now threatened with the dystopian possibility of loss of accreditation.” . . . . “As he (John D. Murphy) outlines in the book, the University of Phoenix went astray when it eliminated admissions standards with the stated goal of fulfilling its founding mission: solely serving working adult learners. With the elimination of entry standards, a new generation of University of Phoenix attendees now depend almost exclusively upon taxpayer-funded student loans and grants from other governmental sources. When the University of Phoenix went public, 80 percent of its working adult students had some or all of their tuition unwritten by their employers.” . . . “ Between 1999 and 2013, the University of Phoenix and Apollo Group paid for or are liable for $242 million in regulatory fines and whistleblower judgments."

Anonymous53794, I admire you for standing up against an increasingly corrupt corporation. Yes, Apollo Group has bought friends in high places, but if there is enough of an uproar, something will get done (eventually). The HLC (and its higher association, CHEA) are also corrupt, but if they face greater scrutiny for not acting, they will lose credibility

Anonymous I wish you well in your endeavor but trust me when I say this, I have seen many who tried to bring the University of Phoenix to justice and all have failed so far. The Apollo Group is well connected and well financed. They have billions of taxpayer dollars in their wallet so they can squash the little man. There were people I worked with who lost their job and went bankrupt blowing the whistle on the University of Phoenix and trying to derail that train wreck but that "school" just rolled over them and kept going. I don't know how that monster grew so large and so far out of control and I don't know who can stop them now. The feds might be able to slow them down by blocking them from recruiting new students but they can't shut them down because that would hurt the students while the executives walk away with billions. As a matter of fact, I believe the executives want the feds to shut them down so the execs can raid the school's treasury. However, IF the feds said "hey, you can't enroll anymore students but you must continue to provide for the students you have until they graduate," that might hurt the execs, block them from raiding the school's treasury while protecting the students but that means the school would go on for at least the next four years.

I'm talking with the HLC about their deceptive practices--they are in for a surprise this next spring/summer from their accreditor.
