Thread regarding Education Management Corporation layoffs

Is there life after EDMC?

I've been applying for a lot of jobs and not having much success getting interviews. Many of my EDMC co-workers are having the same problem. Some have actually gotten interviews where everything seems to go really well and then they don't hear anything. I've only been applying for jobs outside the education industry so I didn't think having EDMC on my resume was a liability. Most people outside our industry have never heard of the company or all these negative stories in the media. I've started to think that maybe potential employers google EDMC when they review your resume. What shows up is not a pretty picture. Any thoughts? Anyone out there will a background in HR that could offer some advice? I'd really appreciate it.

Sounds like "Anonymous54524" is bitter they couldn't handle the job and got fired. Throwing around insults and broad accusations without any supporting points makes you look like a "moran". And clearly none of you work in HR.

@ Anonymous54832, I suspect the incorrect spelling of "moron" and "Go EDMC" are in reference to the infamous protest sign seen in this link: http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/get-a-brain-morans.

After being there for "too" long, you get labeled as "one of them".

And this my friends is what many of us have been saying all along. Get out while you can. EDMC is not respected in the real world. Their degrees are worthless, and unfortunately their employees have been deemed the same. It makes sense. Unfortunately many people do not think outside of the EDMC bubble, until something like this happens. You might be better off not listing EDMC on your resume. Take it from someone who put in many years there, but also left years ago. Get out while you can.

Had no problem. Most employers look at the skill sets and assess the candidate in front of them. I've never had anyone Google the company. After all...you are not the product of the company.

From the informal studies I've conducted EDMC seemed to be paying about 30% above the "street rate" for comparable positions. So it very well could be your requested salary rate that it is hurting your search.

Congrats on making the decision to get out of EDMC! Yes, there is life afterwards! In my case, I worked for Ai for a few years, and looking back, I realize what a soul sucker the company is. All the company cares about is numbers number numbers. They are obsessed with reports and analyzing every single little thing in the hopes of maximizing every single little penny that comes out of the students’ pockets. Your purpose at EDMC is to be a profit producer for an unethical company. I realize now after leaving that I have a greater purpose in life. I have seen many of my co-workers fired or laid off, and some left by choice due to the overwhelming pressure and questionable politics of the company. Get out! Today I am much happier and my spirits have been lifted. I work for a company that has integrity and isn’t a slave driver for profits. I don’t have to go to work every day fearing that I’m not producing, or that I’ll be put on a warning or fired or laid off. Dump this corporate giant before they dump you! Save yourself!!!

P.s. If you’re an ADA or a frontline employee, I think you will be ok finding a job. Imagine how shitty it will be for the big wigs on top to find another “director” job once they get canned? Who will want to hire a corporate executive that played a significant role in how poorly and unethically the company is run? I definitely wouldn’t! It would make me question their character and their abilities and I would shred their resume before even considering hiring them.

Yes, get out before the next layoffs which are coming soon. EDMC is a poorly run organization with antiquated IT, incompetent HR, mongoloids in high positions and will be bankrupt and run out of business within a year.

I haven't had any problems. I've been offered 2 positions just trying to decide which I want to take. The problem is probably with your resume...

WWW.Challengergray.com Challenger Gray and Christmas is an outplacement service. They have lots of terrific advice on their website and much of it is available for free. Please know that there will be a lull in hiring until after the first of the year. This is nothing personal: it is just the cycle, so please don't get discouraged. Do everything you can to demonstrate personal credibility and use some of the Challenger and Gray techniques to distance yourself from the bad decisions of a EDMC executives. If you are interested in pursuing a government job, be sure to sign up for a workshop about how to write resumes for federal positions. I think you're very wise to seek positions outside of proprietary education. Please know that I transitioned out of the industry about six months ago and it was the best decision I have ever made. I took a job that was a promotion with a better salary, a retirement plan, and much better benefits. So the answer to your question isyes, there is life after EDMC. Don't let that place shake your confidence. You can do this!!

Wow! I'd never even thought of that before. I bet a lot of employers do Google that kind of information. It's probably more of a liability the longer you work here. Get out while you still can people!
