Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

I can't focus on work

I don't really care anymore, though. I'm giving Nike as much as it deserves. Which is very little.

@2azp+1rKwixDn That Walmart analogy is great, because if you believe the reason that corporations decide to fire workers due to theft is because they’re not making money you’re already too far gone. Shrink is accounted for but corporate greed is not. So people become expendable , literally the same thing that is happening to us. The workers are doing their jobs and instead of the corporation punishing those at the top who are making millions to make the decisions they punish us because the shareholders aren’t happy. Like I don’t know how the point is flying over your head. You possibly could be upper management then your comments would make sense you are the ones who being brainwashed into sympathizing with corps shame others for not . Even though the only reason you care is because you’re making a pretty penny off the backs of those who can’t even afford food. I bet you sleep well at night. You’re fighting the good fight

Wage theft is actually year on year the biggest sign of theft and where does that come from 👀. You don’t know what that person job is and who it is or isn’t effecting. Talk about not living in a vacuum but your comments are still off base. Just because the way we produce our product isn’t a part of your immediate world doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist so get out of your own vacuum. It’s great you find so much joy from your job and want to be a good scout but we are not at war and we are not soldiers. What they are choosing to do is no skin off of anyone chests because at the end of the day if it’s such a problem go to management complain and get this morally ambiguous person fired. But you won’t, you’ll just complain here. Keep it up OP

@1brp op says they're burned out on Nike's tumult and can't focus so you jump to wage theft? Non sequitur much?

And you think we're struggling foremost because "a lot of people refuse to do work"? That's some of the most blinders on hyperbolic horsesh-t I've read here, pull your head out of the sand and look around.

Likely because people don't work in a vacuum. If Person A is slacking, and Person B is dependent on Person A doing their job in order to do theirs, it affects more than just Person A. This has a ripple effect through the entire company if enough people are phoning it in.

Sprinkling in some strawmen arguments about "capitalism evil" and coporate slavery is not a good argument to make for stealing. That's like saying Walmart is an evil company so it's ok to steal from them and berate the minimum wage employees working there.

Trying to claim someone is morally dubious for chilling at work pecking at keys to move a machine that works off slave labor is quite ironic. Please step outside the capitalism machine and understand exploitation is what keeps the hamster wheel running, why are you upset that this person no longer cares to be exploited or has decided to exploit the same company who is exploiting others. We are all morally corrupt then. Pot meet kettle, kettle meet pot and get off your shiny Nike high horse that a child in the Philippines built and got paid 36 cent for.

Pretending to do your work and accepting payment for it is morally dubious if not outright theft. Justifying your actions by shifting all the responsibility for them to someone else doesn't change that. A lot of the struggles of our company are in part due to the large amount of people who refuse to do any work except work to maintain the illusion they are working.

@1txl+1rKwixDn fu-k exactly what up for everyone else? John and the board are doing the fu--ing, we're just riding this sh-t coaster. When a company chooses to reward its single most valuable asset with little more than constant turmoil, you better expect this incredibly obvious outcome.

I'd counter that you should look elsewhere if you don't like the direction we're being roped along since the morale implications are straight up inevitable and all of us hanging on are just along for the ride. I damn near guarantee you most of the people checking out the hardest are the ones who have put this dumpster fire on their back for years. Ask me how I know.

@1txl+1rKwixDn That is the fault of leadership. They should have thought about that before creating an environment where coworkers are checking out across the board.

As much as people love hating on @zam, and they certainly said it very badly, but if you are so apathetic that you aren't working, just fu--ing leave. While you may be sticking it to the company, you are also letting down everyone else who is just trying to do their job and get by. Some of them may be in circumstances where they can't leave or don't want to. Why fu-k it up for everyone else just so you can coast because of how you feel about the company you work for?

@zam woof that's some top shelf man-child ego drivel. These are the unmistakable words of a vain, insecure douchebag trying to cram every Jocko podcast punch word into one tragic misunderstanding of human motivation and discipline. I bet it felt good to write but it looks d-mb as fu-k on display.

If this is a serious post and not trolling, as a self proclaimed adult, you're awfully overdue for some heavy introspection and a solid humbling.

OP is most of us right now.
@zam— “work on your brand as a worker.”
Wtf? The whole problem with Nike is that all that matters is your brand and cultivating the perception of work. Nobody is actually doing the work.

OP you are not alone. So many people at Nike feel the same way you do. In fact some of the most talented and capable employees I know are feeling this way. Nike is no longer a great place to work and dragging a mass layoff out for 4+ months just shows how little they care about employee morale.

I’m BFFs with a VP who is read-in and I know for a fact they have been planning this since at least last Sept. They had plenty of time to make this as quick and painless as possible but instead they effed it up and employees are paying the price.

@zam+1rKwixDn you are a world class a-hole lacking in basic human decency. We are not indentured servants to our company who can or should be expected to leave all emotions at the door as you so clearly have done. Maybe time for some introspection on why you lack basic empathy for your fellow humans.

OP take it easy. We all feel like this( at least in our department). We are waiting to see what happens in April and we also lost a lot of teammates as they resigned... Try to recharge and put bare minimum for now.

Apathy and burnout is what you are experiencing and it su-ks. My advice would be to use this time to get yourself organized, finish personal projects, and give yourself a break if keeping the lights on is all you can manage. Nothing will change in your status at Nike from now until the end of fiscal (unless you are working on Olympics). If you survive the layoffs you'll most likely have new alignment on a majority of your work and even that will take some time for teams to adjust to. Just make sure you have enough in the tank when the sprint starts June 1st.

Worst case you get laid off, combine your severance with the Oregon tax kicker, take that trip you've been wanting to take, spend time with family and/or friends, enjoy the upcoming sunny weather, rid yourself of the toxicity from the past 2 months, and then leverage the he-l out of the Nike brand name while you look for a new opportunity.

Jon Don is that you? Your disdain for “emotions”, “pathos”, and “humanity” is showing. If anything, your comment is pure projection about how you don’t have morals, so much so that you trash someone for not “bucking up” hard enough to your liking.

Seriously, comments like these are so sad to read. That a human could refuse so harshly to empathize with another human.

FWIW - I empathize with you and your anger towards OP. If you learn to love and accept difference, it may go away - but it is sad to see you suffering so externally as to hurt others. OP, I empathize with you as well. It will get better in time, and you can only focus on what you can control. When/if your number gets called, just be ready for it.

Totally agree with the OP. I am in TPM org and I just put in the bare minimum to survive.

2-3 levels above think I go the extra mile so it shows there is still a disconnect somewhere.

Its a broken system that I cannot see being fixed in years.

In my defense, over the previous 16 years I definitely gave my heart and soul. No more unfortunately.

Nike is just too inept to figure it out.
