Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Too many managers

I believe that the majority here think that multiple management layers such are in Chevron present distinct disadvantages for business. Is it really necessary for Chevron to have so many managers? I think the company would be much better off if it were to get rid of most of them.

Engineers in supervisor roles are redundant. Limited skills and little knowledge of the people they "supervise".

This comment here is completely spot on. Having junior engineers supervising and overseeing field staff with no experience at all in the field has really d-mbed down the entire field team. It doesn't help that they switch them around every two years. I have seen this firsthand in the Odessa FOTs for years now.

If they started eliminating these jobs, where would all the HiPots do? They need a phony baloney title and job to excel at for their next promotion.

Annual net profit is fine. If it’s negative, see how negative per person you are vs others in the industry.

What is your definition of net profit? 2020 we had losses!

A good measure for a fat organization is net profit / Full time employee. Wonder how Chevron compares to others in the industry.

@1bvo+1hFz6ACc: Yes I agree 8-9 layers for a cap, but it is worse than that because there tends to be many side tracts with overlapping scope: The real wasted bulk of managers are those not even in the direct tree.

We have thousands of PSG27-30 who are neither managing, leading nor doing technical work. They give advice, most of it unneeded or wrong. They must go.

Span of control says one should not supervise more than ten. Look for managers with less than ten direct reports and eliminate them.

Say you’re working a large upstream project it goes something like this.
Individual
Eng Team Lead (say as an example)
Eng Mgr (say as an example)
PM
GM Cap Projects
VP/MD
Region President
EVP
CEO

That’s a pretty common arrangement and represents 8 layers beneath CEO. I bet there’s some large projects with 9 and the bowels of IT probably have that many too.

Please post here how many layers between your current roll and the CEO. For me, it is 4 but I have been around a while. I imagine for some people it is 7 or even 8.
