Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

On EM people.

EM used to be a place that attracted talent. Today, that talent is gone, and what is left is a repository for 5 kind of individuals:.

1-The greedy.
2-The desperate.
3-The imbeciles.
4-The soul crushed
5-The cynics.

1- The greedy are the money/ranking motivated, the kool-aid drinkers, the back stabbers, the managers, the executives, all the unscrupulous, uncaring, dishonest, and incompetent sharks that we all know about.

2-The desperate are the green card seekers, the deep in debt, those burdened with medical or divorce expenses, in desperate need for a paycheck, health insurance, or work authorization.

3-The imbeciles are those who has been brainwashed by management so deeply that they convinced themselves they have a bright future in this company.

4- The soul crushed are those whose talents and voices have been so neglected and silenced, that they have become desensitized zombies whose only motivation is to avoid PIP until retirement.

5-The cynics are those whose level of disappointment has run so hig, and whose level of trust has run so low, that they just don't give an absolute fk about anything anymore.

ExxonMobil ganda hai. Gandi company and gande log!

The mindset and actions of supervisors and managers is pathetic. As if the most talentless and spineless men and women have been selected for the job. The fake smiles and disgustingly shameless upwards management attitude is apparent. A normal person brings the company gem and the boss brings cr-p these supervisors will take cr-p and justify it as diamond. These are the snakes of the lowest quality.

Re @4jyl

As you are making observations of others, others are doing the same to you. You may be one of the very few that may end up at the tippy top one day, but if you are, there really is no reason for you to be here. Why? You will be too busy relocating from location to locationg getting your chit stamped instead of trolling on a layoff forum.

You are here because at some level, you concern about the direction of this company and want to hear for people have to say (negatively). Try to keep an open mind, understand the frustration of some, have empathy, it will only help you build connections at work. You are entitled to your opinion as much others w/ theirs.

Most of us make decent money here, and any raise at this point will have no change on lifestyle. People here have more issue with company's approach on corporate "right sizing", rather than offer a package, they force them through this demoralizing, artificial ranking and push them out like used coffee grinds. Most of the toxic culture of this company are built upon this ranking system and got worse over time.

So much anger. I can appreciate why you are doing so much better at this company than others. You seem to possess key attributes to be successful at ExxonMobil.

Wait until you turn 50 and see if you have the same perspective.

I’m making more money at EM than most so this thread would not apply to me. Too bad, so sad.

@2xtx Maybe, but probably not. Several credible published polls/surveys show that older employees have a stronger desire for in-person work.

It’s also true that bosses skew older and often have more trouble with digital tools. I suspect both factors make them feel less secure about remote work.

There’s almost no training, mentorship, or collaboration taking place in the office, and this was true even before Covid, so let’s not waste bandwidth arguing that. Your boss wants you there because he’s invested in commercial real estate, gets occupancy-based tax breaks, and wants to have as much control over you as possible.

@2tcv To answer your question, as few as possible.

Keep the downvotes coming. Downvote me to eternity if you want to, but I’m still younger and (probably) making more money than you are. I’ll be retiring sooner too.

Maybe you and others of your ilk should try up-skilling and making a better lot for yourselves instead of whining about changes to working culture that you have no control over. If you’re unable or unwilling to do so, then you should ask yourself why you’re even still in the knowledge workforce to begin with.

@2hfx+1nWNsHmm How many products do you use daily from this disgusting, nasty industry? I doubt that you have the minutest clue! DEI IS A DISEASE AND IT IS EXTREMELY PREVAILENT AS MUCH AS IT IS ILLEGAL! It is the way if the REPROBATES!

I just completed a senior management presentation showing that there are two types of employees at EM: 1) those who want to work from home and 2) those who don't; and, it's mostly the older that want to work in an office building.

@2hfk Several firms are offering up to $250k/year TC for top talent with specific skills fresh out of school. People with prior experience are clearing $400k/year TC. If you’re good in AI/ML the world is your oyster. You’re in the wrong industry.

Maybe you should have sent your kid to a better school or told them get a more marketable skill set. I’d also suggest getting out of the O&G mindset.

People with the right skills are easily clearing $200k right out of college????

As a parent of a young adult who graduated from college this year, I can tell you that $200k is not "easy". And don't forget the hundreds of thousands in student loans.

“unqualified people in their position because DEI requires quotas”

I have no idea why people here keep flogging this. This is illegal and demonstrably untrue.

FYI: nobody who is talented (of any race) wants to come and work in your dirty oilfield, at your dangerous process plants, at your hideous office, or to wait 20 years to make $200k/year base comp. People with the right skills are easily clearing that right out of college.

@2tyh There are really only two types of employees at any company; the ones who can get up and walk out at anytime and the ones who can’t.

If you can get up and walk out then you’re not getting what you’re worth. If you can’t then you are.

It is actually much simpler. Only three type. The Good, The Bad. The Ugly.

The Good. About 50-70 % of all employees. The show up and are friendly and smile and are polite and are active in their communication and or engaging their families. They work so hard and always will work so hard regardless of what an id--t boss may say the rgp is up or down or flat.

The Bad. Easy to see the snakes in the grass, under cutters and liars galor. Or real unqualified people in their position because DEI requires quotas. They don’t hide it … they embrace it. About 10-20 % of the population.

The Ugly. They are actually really great looking men and or smoking hot or moderate hot women (mostly women under the age of 40 but a few cute 50’s something still around) and that will stab everyone in the back if it will advance their own personal agenda. Also very easy to spot. About 10-20% of the population.

It reads to me as a fair and accurate observation of the current state of affairs.

@OP and everyone else lamenting for the good-old days:

Knock it off.

It’s boring. It’s lame. It’s pointless. It also comes across as washed-up old men playing the world’s smallest violins.

Get over yourselves and realize that the good old days (as you understand them) are never coming back. Ever.

If you want to keep dragging yourself to the office everyday to do mediocre work for a mediocre company when you can/should move on that’s on you, not them.

To those saying baby boomers are the problem .....definitely not worked at XOM for a day.

It's the old school managers that are reasonable. They are not interested in what you do day to day as long as you deliver and make them look good. In turn, they will make sure you rank good. They may not say things that are politically correct at times and may swear here and there, at least they call a spade a spade. These days with the younger quickly promoted manager, they are insecure, they think they know everything and they get in the way and play politics left and right.

...."EM is still. great company to work for, and if you perform well your pay is great"....

You are definitely a 3 on your way to crush land into 4!!!!

Do you truly believe this company is a meritocracy?

It will come the day my friend when an incompetent supervisor will take over your team and the neglecting and silencing of your talents and voice will explode in your face.

Make sure you have a good psychiatrist at hand because it will be hard to recover for the depression you will fall into when you realize that you are not that special and different and unique as you believe you are.

I love it when people who are in the best jobs in the company tell us how great the company is. Of course it is for YOU! For the rest of us not in management, it is the hunger games with one year contracts. I know, I know - it shouldn’t be anyone’s problem since it’s not YOUR problem.

@1lfg+1nWNsHmm I felt the same way for the first 10 years with the company. Then a new supervisor came in to our group that was so oblivious to what we did, he couldn’t find his way out of a paper bag. Why our group didn’t promote from within is still a mystery.

Then there was another bad manager. And another. Two to three year rotations were just enough time to gut the team, before the next “new” manager came in that was worse than the one before. These people had NO grasp or knowledge of the business, and absolutely zero care for the group. They were there to punch their ticket, and make a name for themselves on their way to the next assignment - in a totally DIFFERENT group.

If you haven’t experienced that yet, you’ve been incredibly fortunate - Or, not around very long! It’s not a question of you doing or being AMAZING - it’s luck of the draw. Being at the right place at the right time, and with the right supervisors that recognize your value and worth and promote you. That kind of treatment does great things for your attitude and morale.

I’ve had those good managers, they do exist. But they have become increasingly rare. Most don’t have two brain cells to rub together and are threatened by their own shadow.

"I don’t see my number. Someone who gets paid a lot of money to do a job I love. What number is that? (Engineer, Upstream, Rotator)."

Same here! Despite what folks on this board keep on saying, EM is still. great company to work for, and if you perform well your pay is great. It was no surprise, when I read in the other thread that most folks on this board are low level MPTs (25-26) with moderate performance.
