Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Second Chance At Chevron

I am lucky that Chevron has given me a second chance. My first experience with Chevron was great and this experience is something else. I worked in Midland from 2012 to 2013 and then had to resign to take care of family issues. I got hired back 6 months ago and was beyond excited.

My excitement has faded each and every month. I have gotten side conversations from people telling me the only reason I got a second chance is because I am a black woman.

The white males tell me that they are scarred and that they don't have any upward mobility and that they will probably be replaced by a woman or minority.

These conversations are real and they take up way to much bandwidth. With my hand on the bible, I swear that I support putting the best person in a job, period. I hear other women saying, well, turnabout is fair play. Well, ladies, two wrongs do not my it right.

I hate that this company that I put on a pedestal has fallen into this weird MW woke culture.

I love the money and the benefits but not the culture. This black woman is now shopping for a new job where collaboration, intelligence and work ethic are more important than D&I metrics.

This is another reason why I am leaving Chevron. I am the OP. I did not just drop my post and leave. I shared my experience and wanted others to have a chance to voice theirs.

I hope each and every one of you go back and read these post. The hate and willingness to attach is so Chevron these days.

Also, I am not a white troll. I am now a black mom with a lot of pride in the work that I do. I worked my a-s off in Midland and I enjoyed every minute of it. To call my experience rusted is just....you fill in the blank.

Amen to the OP. Spot on assessment.

@enm, Go ahead and retire now if you like, but don’t give me the BS reason is because of the increasing rates. Even after mustering an impressive 37 years and huge pension, you shouldn’t make so much hay over the rising interest averages. Just work one additional year and that salary alone will more than compensate for any downside on the pension lump sum. Your advise shouldn’t be taken seriously unless looking to pull the trigger on retirement for a few years already. Do it and get out.

This story is way too crazy to be true. If this is a professional position, someone who worked in Midland 2012-2013 was working conventional assets. Now everything there is UCR. There's also no way Chevron is going to hire back someone whose skills rusted for 8 years, unless, of course, it's to fill the D&I metrics, or to fill some low-level finance or HR position. Then again, those low-level postions are a dime-a-dozen, no reason to hire back someone whose been off the market for 8 years.

@1czg yeah, pretty obvious with this one.

I mean how many black females could there be in Midcon that left Chevron and just came back a few months ago?

Where is the OP? Seems a bit strange that this fake person vaporized into thin air after one troll post.

I’m not defending the practices OP describes, but do you blame CVX? Woe to those companies that do not virtue signal in an overt way and worship at the altar of woke, for they shall be vanquished by the almighty activist shareholder.

MW has played word games. He said that the best candidate for a job slate will be selected regardless of race or gender. BUT when you limit the the number of jobs selections for white men and give unlimited chances for women and minorities then you are essentially using race and gender for hiring.

@ssj+1gr1lQTB Actions speak louder than words. MW may not have specifically said put less qualified persons in jobs but as others have stated, and I have witnessed, they have put people in jobs that are simply not qualified and it was done to achieve D&I metrics.

The OP is right on target and I applaud her honest assessment. I also hope she succeeds in her role and will be promoted because she's "the most qualified candidate".....not to meet some metric.

+1gr1lQTB, I would recommend you read his article in the WSJ during the reorganization.

Can I have some cheese to go with all this whine? Never has MW said put less qualified people in jobs. That goes for black women, white men, or anyone else. He’s just said make the process more transparent, include people with different points of view, and recognize that the makeup of our entire workforce is changing.

This board is becoming more like watching a cable news show where someone with a loud voice tries to whip everyone into a frenzy over race. You can find it on both MSNBC and Fox News. It is sad that a few people are so wrapped into their own grievances and feel like the best thing they can do is vent on some anonymous website.

I guess you can technically say I am gone. I have retired after 37 years. It is hard for me to believe 37 years just shot by. I love this company and all of the opportunities it has given to me and my family. So, why now?

INTEREST RATES!!!! - I looked at my pension and it was time to get the he-l out of Dodge. If you have 30+ years, take a look at your pension. You may want to exit now or you could loose a lot of cash.

It hurts me deeply to hear people talk about how the culture of the company has changed. I see it. I am a white man that sits on selection committees and it hurts me when I am told the person I have to take is based on the D&I metric. I did not select one of my best friends that was the best person for the job during the reorganization because I was told that it was outside of the needed metric. I do think this will hurt Chevron in the short run. I can't imagine why any young white male would work here.

We are a woke company. No ifs ands or buts about it. Chevron is going to survive. It will be fine just with a woman as the captain and there isn't anything wrong with that (caveat: as long as she is the best person for the job and anything is better than MW)

I love you guys and try to find a way to be nice to each other. I know it is hard.

Thanks for your honesty. What is sad is "diversity" could easily be summed and taught to yees with simple -
"Treat others with respect, the way you want to be treated. Use common sense business courtesy in trying to do well but also help co-workers along with being sensitive to differences in race, gender, religon, and cultures different than yours" (much common sense).

Otherwise, we are here to run a business/make profit so go do your job well. If we observe problem childs that that are causing issues related to above, deal with them. Otherwise leave remaining 95% plus alone as they do their job.....

I have been here almost 5 years. Why am I leaving?

  1. I moved from Pittsburg when the Chevron office closed there. I had a baby in Houston 2 years ago. I woke up one morning and just realized, my child will not know their cousins, my parents, my spouses parents the way we did growing up. We have no support force here. I really don't trust my coworkers so we called it on Monday, April 18th with 2 weeks notice. My boss and her boss called me and asked what it would take to stay. I was offered a $20,000 pay increase and one grade promotion to stay. I said no. I want to be where I grew up. I want to be happy and it is not Houston and it is not Chevron. The final words from my boss was, dont expect for us to have a hand out if you want to return. It is a one way street.
  1. The other reason is just the work and the culture. I am so tired of the meanness people show toward each other here. I am so tired of the diversity conversation. I am so tired of being told that I got the job because I am a black female le----n. I am so tired of people asking me who my sponsor is. I am just tired of this sh-t show.

Chevron does not pay us well because this is a good place to work. They pay us well because it is a terrible place to work and it is the only way to hold on to employees.

I wish all of you the very best of luck and I hope you all can find your way out of this darkness and jealousy that has surrounded so many of you.

I am on my 8th month here and I think you are correct across the board. The only thing I don't think you will find somewhere else is better pay. Chevron's culture and moral is the worst of any company i have worked.

I am 100% girl power but my god, it is as if Chevron deliberately picked poor performing females to promote/hire. In one of my get-to-know-you meetings, I had the pleasure to meet the head of Chevron's Emergency Response Team. She knew nothing about what the company does. She did not understand refining, exploration, production or retail. In our meeting, she looking like she had gotten off the night shift working at Ricks Cabaret. Maybe the tammy faye stripper look is in now . This person represents us to the world and she doesn't even understand what we do.

Chevron is doomed if we keep this up.
