Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Layoffs not needed when Attrition from no GDP

Another year, another year of no GDP. It’s almost comical that IBM wants a high performance culture yet doesn’t do jack for it’s high performance employees. Looks like no GDP will create more high performers to walk....maybe save some from layoffs. Long term though, As the high performers continue to leave more layoffs will be needed as sales/revenue follow the high performers elsewhere

@ylb+198gg7X9 There was NO GDP last year. The Employee Stock Plan is not GDP; It goes to a small fraction of the population, so you were lucky.

IBM is not failing... it is dying...

This means it will completely disappear at some point. That point is coming sooner than later.

It is a guarantee.

@czu there are two kinds of bonuses, one for individual achievement and the other for overall company growth. There are very few individual bonuses and that is fine, it is good to set a high bar. The problem is the overall company achievement part, which has not happened in years even as IBM execs get millions and tell us everything is great. The company is failing so no one should get bonuses.

I never every employee will get an award... It is will be at the discretion of the FLMs... Let's see what they do. At the end of the day, each FLM has to find a way to keep their team together because in services at least they have REV targets. With this announcement, everyone on the team will expect to get something or they will leave, high performer or not... also high performance at IBM is a term that is difficult to define unfortunately!!!

With all the money they saved on business travel and in person customer events, that should have funded some sort of GDP! That saved the company hundreds or millions!

@nss... NO. Why would to give award money to every employee?
Do you really think every employee deserves an award?
That’s another way you’d drive out high performers. If the slackers get just as much an award as the top performers, you are devaluing the top performers and diminishing their drive to perform.

Yep, the GDP will most likely never get funded ever again... to replace it, it is the 100M which is absolute chimp change... Great job IBM!!

A wad of cash?!?!

So AK say it is 100 million. It obviously will not go to people that are going to get laid off this year...

So quick calculation.... today 340K employees, after NewCo spinoff and other layoffs at least 140K heads are falling... so we are at 200K employees... remove all management, this is at least 50K
so 150K employees to split the 100 millions... so 100M / 150K = $666.66 per employee take out all the taxes and the amount will be less than $500... does that motivate anyone?

And may be some first line managers will not split evenly within their team, still this is a ridiculous amount of money, if you get anything!!

Yes, this is yet another scheme to make people leave without having to pay severance. Unfortunately, only the high performers will leave, and the vicious circle keeps momentum... Less great people to deliver, less revenue, more cost cutting... That is called the IBM WAY!!!

So let me get this straight...2 straight years of no pay raises for employees?
And they expect IBM to grow?
Is leadership completely insane or just stupid?

I worked at ibm for close to 6 years. The bottom line is they have a momentum associated with their failures that cannot be changed. I’m sure Jim Whitehurst is pulling his hair out at ibm wondering “I got a ton of money for this acquisition, what am I doing here”. If u r a high performing individual u will go crazy there. IBM sat on the sidelines for cloud computing growth and then, a day late and dollar short, they jumped in and said “we r IBM”. The market said- who cares! They have a long line of lifers working the “ibm way”. Even though they were the reason for the companies downfall they stil have jobs and were put in positions of authority to sink, I mean, steer, the ship. They marketed the hell out of vaporware (Watson) and put every sales person in the uncomfortable position of lying to customers. The truth is IBM is done if it continues to go down the road of trying to compete with the likes of Microsoft, AWS and Google. That opportunity passed so they need to get their sh*t together and realize there is a new IBM that needs to built. That new ibm will not be build with the same people who drove the company into the ground.

I’m sure that managers will be instructed to give that “wad of cash” to very few designated people that they want to try to retain through all of this. He just didn’t want to say the vast majority will get nothing again this year. Don’t be holding your breath for any cash in your pocket. The only cash many of us will see will be our “parting gift”.

Yes and no.
No GDP this year. Managers will get award cash (probably small) and employees will get bluepoints to give away to other employees. Only managers have had BPs to give. Don't hold your breath on the amounts.

Note how he stressed, twice, "this is going to cost us millions". If this isn't foreshadowing a story line of RAs in order to do it, I don't know what is.

Also... there was GDP last year. I got a quite a bit of stock for GDP.
