Any other teams blindsided by their management regarding RTO expectations? Leading up to this point, the message had been it would be flexible, we could leave when we needed to, including mid afternoon to do pick ups, etc. and all of the sudden today it was a draconian expectation to be there until 5. This is a team already looking to backfill positions. How do they think the have the luxury to send this message to the team when they are already hurting for talent? Did this come from higher up?

Yep, and what’s worse is that second hand smoke is far more dangerous than COVID. It’s not even a close comparison.
Finally Charlie is able to come out of his shell. Hold on to your hats, this is going to be a wild ride.
I don’t get why suddenly since COVID we expect companies to bend over backwards to accommodate all of our individual needs. I may be old but “back in the day” child care issues, etc were the employees responsibility to handle. No one expected to be able to come and go as needed. Work was 8:30-5 no exceptions. Got the job done and dealt with your personal matters later. I have enjoyed the flexibility of work from home but have no reason to expect any employer to let me dictate work based on my personal life.

Smoke mixed with perfume to hide it gags you worse.
"As long as I still get my hourly smoke breaks, i’ll be fine"
This is the worst part about working in an office. No matter what, you have to smell the smokers. And since they're addicts you're smelling them constantly "refresh" that odor. And if they smoked with wet hair? /pu-e
All you east coasters have no room to complain when you schedule your "last meeting before the weekend" at 3pm on Friday. You just screwed every west coaster that needs to attend out of lunch.
This is why it's called WORK
@bnq+1feQ40gd
Why not? I'm guaranteed the same day off each week over summer because one of my child's caregivers is occupied on that day. I just tell my boss when it starts, and when it ends and work extra on the other days.
@flw+1feQ40gd
You can take them, but the time for each one is added up. If it comes out to more than 2x 20 min breaks throughout the day, you may be asked to "punch out" in workday.
when east coasters expect us west coasters to be on 6am calls, I make them be on 8pm calls.

Actually tons of chiefs and too many Indians.
I understand if some want to leave but I plan to go in and rarely be at my desk and if questioned, I’m gonna say I was collaborating.
@1rgm+1feQ40gd, LOL! I have never heard that Chucky hated that west coasters were “on so late”. I mean, most of us understand and have accepted how time zones work by a young age. Surely he wouldn’t utter such a stupid statement out loud! You know who works east coast hours on the west coast? Employees of the Pacific Stock Exchange (Which is defunct) + I’m sure CSRs that primarily serve east coasters. Anyhow, can you imagine the flack he’d get if he asked west coasters to report at 5 am? You realize public transit is barely running at that hour, right? Finally! Phoenix is a hub and AZ is on MST year-round…that means they’re 3 hours behind EDT for 8 months of the year.
I thought they were getting rid of Hubs on the west coast. So if someone was still there why would Corporate want to adhere to local time and not force to work EST? I thought Charlie hated that the west coasters were on so late in the morning (8am PT/11amET). Doesn’t make sense. I’m thinking this 8-5 talk is nonsense.
Am I wrong?
Saul said he trusted Technology and they could continue to be remote.
Now we know we can't trust anything that sip of his coffee says.
What makes you think there will be a lunch break, pleb?
will they be timing lunch breaks too? SMH
If you leave before 5 you have to get a pass or log out with security.
WF is circling the (brain) drain.
Dinosaur-thinking "leaders" are an embarrassment.
They are all in it for cash grab before the ship sinks. Look how many execs they've hired in the past few months, all feeding at the $$$ trough. Tons of chiefs and not enough indians.
@bnq+1feQ40gd - When you are offered a new position and the manager tells you they will be flexible with school schedules, then yes, I would expect them to keep their word or I would have stayed in the position that didn't care when I came and went at all. Not all kids need daycare, but need a way home. In my case, my kids aren't done until 4 pm, so going in early to accommodate this isn't an unreasonable ask.
There's a difference between expectation and requirement.
I expect senior executives will be ethical and fair and make decisions in the best interest of the company and employees. I expect leadership will provide meaningful performance reviews and merit increase that align with actual performance and corporate results.
As long as I still get my hourly smoke breaks, i’ll be fine
You think you get special accommodations to go pickup your kids? What about all the other parents working here? An occasional event is one thing but every week? Nope. The HR response will will be find daycare like everyone else in the job market.
Nope, I’ve received absolutely nothing from my leadership. I manage a team and I’m usually the one proactively checking with my boss on guidance vs. the other way around. It would be laughable if my group dictated 8-5 hours for everyone. Pre-COVID, I maintained strict 7:30-4:30 hours for commute reasons. When I changed roles a few years ago, that became more of a plus, as I work with a lot of folks in the eastern time zone. Conversely, my ET and CT staff tend to start and end work a bit later so we can overlap more. But if someone says I need to work 8-5, then I’ll have an even suckier commute and a bunch of Charlotte colleagues unhappy because they can’t reach me before 11 am their time. Working remote, I’m always online before 7 so that’ll be a big adjustment. This is gonna be a $h!tshow.
It must depend on the group. The message for those reporting up through Doug Smith, is that there is some flexibility; not only in hours worked, but also start and end times. There are also some other groups that have been more successful with RTO exceptions. In the area where I live (non-hub), the employees in one group have been told they will be working from home permanently, and they never had an RTO date. This makes the messaging especially silly as it pertains to “better together.” Since it is a non-hub location, very few jobs post to the site, all of my co-workers are located elsewhere, and the networking I do takes place virtually.
Are you not exempt? If they're forcing you into a highly supervised situation they are violating federal exemption laws.
Yes, this message was loud and clear for the January RTO date. It was 8-5 in the office, no leaving early to pick up kids or run errands, and that in/out time would be monitored. We were all expected to jump to, turn our lives and routines inside out to accommodate all the bu-----t innovation and collaboration that are supposedly going to magically happen in the office.
Chuckie - You can stuff all this fu----g bu-----t up your a-s! Be a man already and just lay people off. Do your fu----g job and actually understand the company and where cuts are needed and then do that. That’s actually an honorable way to get the job done. But no, he takes a miserable cowardly way out. Fu----g imbecilic loser!
when a situation arises why not ask your manager if you can take off a few hours early and make it up later from home like people do now. if I need to be away from my computer for a couple hours because of an appt or something with the kids I tell my boss and it is taken care of.
I know that is how it has been which is why we all feel blindsided and pi---d off.
Wtf are you talking about? We've always been able to go out for lunch leave early to meet the cable guy, etc. That isn't going to change. Maybe call centers and such can't. Stop spreading fake news.
These are jobs already located in hubs that I can confidently say would not be rolled to overseas due to the nature of who the positions interact with.
I don’t think they care about keeping talent or getting new US talent. They are looking for attrition and if they need to refill positions, they prefer overseas or hubs. Companies shifting work overseas have the upper hand and don’t care what employees want.
We haven’t been given any instructions yet. No clue what days in, times of day.. nada. Excellent planning strategy.
Remember, RTO is only about getting people to quit so that severance and unemployment don't have to be paid out.
US headcount reduction is the name of the game.
Give them what they (think they) want.
Good luck hiring people into these positions compared to flexibility from other companies.
