EM does not care that the best are leaving

This is my impression, that the company has never cared less about the departure of institutional knowledge that will be almost impossible to replace with equally high-quality employees. Did they even try to stop someone from leaving?

I left the company in 2021 and at the time was an mechanical engineer making ~91k base salary after 3 yrs with the company, starting salary was 65k per year. My base salary at my new employer excluding stock options or bonus is 175k so thats apples to apples comparison, I left Baytown and now I work at a data center. I would fully believe the 200k number for tech all day the other poster is tossing out, particularly if you were willing to move. I was high ranked but disagreed with how the company was treating people. Though tech industry is having layoffs, its is marketing, advertising, customer service and not people in hardware. I work in person, long hours very similar to the refinery but management is happy to have competent people for long term goals, vs the what have you done for me lately PIP 5%+ and outsource everything approach.

Wish you all the best but some times grass is truly greener. Even with all these supposed hiring freezes, companies are still posting and hiring mechanical, electrical, aerospace, chemical engineers so keep the applications going out regularly, you can always say no but gives you some options. I know people who left the company now working in tech, rare earth mining, defense, chemical, consulting all over the place now. I'm 26 but had several "boomers" at the company give me good mentoring advice to leave and chose a different path or at least go to work for an independent (more money but more risk), they straight up said the company they had been loyal to for decades had betrayed them (basically took habitually less pay for job stability, and now no more stability or any warning seeing people go from top to laid off via PIP in 1 year) and could no longer be a place to succeed long term particularly for younger people. They still did their job, developed their people and did a good job for the company. Everyone left at the company was working hard, people were sleeping at the facility too tired to drive home some nights, I never had the ability or wanted to work from home and had no issue coming into work. These "slackers" people troll about I never saw it, unfortunately the company is just blinding cutting headcount and this is the climate that results, I think they want to cut cost regardless of who they lose or whatever is the consequences. Heard you all have been having more incidents as people cut corners, overloaded with actual work, tired which I can believe but never saw details on that since I left. Never desire for anyone to get hurt, but the company seems to be seeing the effect from that cut everyone, take short cuts, lose experienced people, and cut cost approached. I'll leave you with this data from my time at the company, when I first joined we had a brief and had safety review as part of the review for 10-20 minutes of an hour long meeting, my last year with the company the safety portion of a similar meeting was under 2 minutes and the presenter straight up said the corporation only cares about speed and profits if you want to survive PIP in July.

@1emh That’s a poignant story.

The so-called “young ones” who have cutting-edge skills are being rewarded with high compensation, upward mobility, and location flexibility in high-growth, tech-dependent industries. What you’re saying largely applies to someone trying to build a career in O&G. No reasonable person under the age of 40 with a brain is actually trying to do so.

How long did it take you to get to $200k+ for compensation? That’s the starting salary in my industry, and that doesn’t include the equity packages and quarterly bonuses. Plus, I can work from anywhere, which is one of the perks that come with being able to operate a computer.

Property in the Blue Ridge mountains is dirt cheap. Smoking is bad for you. Not sure why you highlight this.

I hope someday you can see the big picture.

I’ll be working from Barcelona beginning next week. A bit nicer than rural West Virginia I would think.

They want to abolish the industry and complain they won't have the potential to make the same salary. Does self inflicting defeat sound applicable? Not angry! Fully relaxed. Astonished by the lack of insight they have to see what they are doing to themselves and how oblivious they are that they do not even have their own original thoughts. Newsflash youngsters, old people need to work too! They require food and shelter just like any other human. Life happens and they likely don't have all the assets and superiority you believe they do. Many have been through things you have yet to experience and hopefully never have to experience. So get over your lack of life experience and stop being spoiled punks!

As I see it, the problem is that most these young ones will never reach the levels we did with respect to salary, financial independence and technical proficiency our careers. Things have chanced. They missed the boat and they are mad about it. As more of then realize this, their shouting will continue.

Seriously, I'll say a short pray for them as relax this afternoon on my scenic Blue Ridge property, slipping and smoking to my hearts delight (Thanks EM).

@OP What on earth makes you think the “best” are leaving?

A lot of the people leaving are the ones who can’t navigate Windows or use Google. I think Exxon will survive. I also highly doubt they’re being offered seven figure salaries by large tech companies (a favorite trope of disgruntled O&G employees).

@Boomers: it isn’t the job of everyone under the age of 40 to repeatedly teach you basic computer skills. If you’re befuddled by navigating Windows then maybe it’s time for you to leave the workforce. We-ponized incompetence is a thing.

Out of the dozens and dozens of people that I know have left, only one was countered by EM and didn’t take it. They were in an extremely specialized area (dev planning).
