Thread regarding National Oilwell Varco Inc. layoffs

To leave O&G or just this company?

I have always wanted to work in this industry. Now I am in a dilemma whether to leave the industry or just this company?
I would also like to hear the experiences of those who left O&G.

This depends on many factors, first of all how many years you are planning to work before you retire. Secondly in which sector in the O&G you want to work.
NOV O&G is mainly present in upstream and midstream activities and a very small bit in the renewable business.
Upstream would be a short term career opportunity, that portion of the business will get smaller after each business cycle. There are certainly short term solutions but within 5 years you can expect some headwind again, and I think NOV already missed out in the small up-tick in the current business cycle. Midstream has a bit of a longer horizon but it will certainly not be a big money maker for NOV there a better companies around. With the renewables they have a lot of competition, and basically there are better Crane builders around the world than NOV, but they will get a big portion of the ja--ing units required to lift the construction and maintance vessels for the offshore windfarms. That business is quite good at the moment but it will be up and down cycle as the original O&G business than it depends what kind of AM business it will represent for the future.

Even the NOV's so called "The Voice" has quit! What do you expect?
Discrimination + Downfall = NOV + O&G

O&G is a fast dying business. Even universities who bragged of offering "Petroleum Engineering" are going otherwise. You can put that under category : Mining, Coal, etc. It will linger around for a while until Renewables, Nuclear and other alternatives take over full fledge. NOV is thin as painting coat to stick around.
Move out!
