Turn video on while using Teams

We can’t watch you in the office so we are going to track how many people have their cameras on.

Just during meetings. Data is being reported on it team by team what is the percentage of video being used during meetings.

So wait am I misunderstanding what they are asking... we’re supposed to leave camera on all the time or just during meetings?

Teams also interfaces with other applications too. Probably best to use the teams web app as opposed to the standalone application.

Microsoft collects a lot of data too and performs analytics for its customers. Wouldn’t be surprised if this becomes a metric for HR.

If there's no way to get out of this on your team, you can use one of the backgrounds Teams provides, or upload your own photos to use as backgrounds. And, if you turn on a background while keepung the camera on but lens covered, it will only display the background and not you. But I agree, this really eats up bandwidth and makes meeting audio choppy.

I disabled the camera on my Honeywell laptop a while ago. If you go into "Device Manager" (Win10) and find your webcam in the list, you can right click and choose disable. Software won't be able to even see the camera is there.

You can play stupid if anyone asks you to turn on your now virtually non-existent camera.

Also electrical tape.

But yes, I'm working out of my parents home and this is both extremely invasive and way too hard on their slower internet connection. If anything, it would make meetings MORE distracting since I'd end up having way too much visual nonsense going on people's cameras, rather than focusing on what people are talking about.

I turn my video on. But, my laptop lid is closed, so everyone sees a dark screen. It will annoy the heck out of my workmates, but i will claim compliance to our HR master's policy!!

Prior to lockdown, this was never requested. I was in the office daily yet never once asked to video. Why now? Seens invasive. Why should I share my home with people I would never invite in?

The problem I have as someone mentioned is that I don't look at the laptop screen at all. I have a 32" TV that I use for my work monitor because the laptop screen is too small for crunching numbers all day long and my eye sight is not that great. My laptop is way off to the side on another table off of my desk. Basically the camera at best would be looking at my shoulder or the side of my head. Not going to be switching all of my equipment around every couple of hours so folks can see my eyeballs.

Agree if we only having a verbal discussion. But most calls are to share or review data, so all will be and should be focused on the preso, not paying attention to those miniature video movements which can become distracting. Should focus on the data on screen

If the company wants the folks they are paying to use video conferencing what is the issue?

You don't want to comb your hair?

Don't want to use it? Fine. As the other mentioned, usage is monitored. Let it be reflected on reviews.

Another reason to document......

I do know that they’ve been watching the metrics for video usage. The numbers were very low. Hence the drive to get people using the technology.

Overall it’s not an unrealistic ask.

I agree - it keeps you better connected and acting a bit more like you are in the office with the team. We all need to get back and focussed on results, meeting objectives and delivering on business commitments - that’s what we get paid to do and using technology to our advantage is essential.

Having your camera on is a good thing. Keeps you closer to the balance of your team.

Dumbest idea ever! My wifi does not have the bandwidth to tackle video, much less regular audio. Every Teams meeting i attend, people have trouble with their audio. The HR id–ts that came up with this idea should be fired. They are too stupid, even for Honeywell!

Not practical for me. My camera resides on my laptop that is located way to the side of my two large monitors.no way to turn it so I’d be on camera.

Not doing it...

Does this mean I now have to take a shower before my shift and put a shirt on when I work?

Easy fix for privacy between meetings: Keep the camera on and either have one of those stick-on sliding covers over the camera lens or use a removable sticky note.
