Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Terminated… Now what?

I was recently laid off. What are the next steps? Am I supposed to get some sort of communication from HR? Do I just apply for unemployment? How does SUB pay work? Is that something that I get automatically or do I have to apply as well? How do I get ahold of HR to answer these questions? Or was I only going to get a 2 minute phone call with my manager after more than 5 years which went like “BNY is terminating their relationship with you, log off after this call. You’re young, Good luck.”

Nice try, but nobody outside of Senior Management has an employee contract.

Employment at the Bank has always been “At Will” both ways for all but Sr Mgt.

Read this carefully and am pretty sure that this was for cause.

This ex-employee has two tasks.

First, use the boxes to send back the Bank property or you will be billed for it.

Second, Apply for unemployment.

There won’t be any Sub as this is a straight out termination.

If this had happened to me I would call the manager a few times to ask why.

@dwlk

Don’t blow off shipping the Bank’s equipment back or you will be charged for it.

Most of the helpful messages here aren’t really all that helpful as this clearly wasn’t a layoff. This worker was clearly terminated for cause.

@OP

From your description, you were terminated for cause. Get your act together enough to ship back your equipment. There won’t be Sub or Severance. Hopefully you can learn from this.

@Op

Now you job hunt instead of wasting time on a layoff board. That’s what.

Don’t believe that any run of the mill employees have employee contracts.

Senior Management do have employment contracts.

Employment at the Bank is at will. You can quit at any time and the bank can terminate you at any time. There is no defined benefit for SUB. It reads to me that you made a horrible impression on management and your team and that you were terminated for cause.

We’re obviously not getting the whole story here.

This sounds like termination for cause to me. Pro Tip: It takes a lot of lousy performance to be displaced with cause. Learn from this mistake and try to work on your attitude and approach to work in the future.

It’s actually expensive to hire and everybody involved wants you to succeed.

Probably depends what you were terminated for if you were terminated with cause I doubt you would be entitled to the sub pay and it may even be difficult to receive unemployment.

If you have the written policy downloaded somewhere in your original contract you can get a lawyer if HR doesn’t answer as you are entitled to the sub pay.

I also never received a mid year review or year end comments/feedback throughout the process. Hopefully you have a better experience for what it’s worth.

Nope I was told my services were no longer required and the decision was final and that hr would be in contact but I never received anything except boxes to send my things back. I finally called the hotline after a week of waiting . A few weeks later I needed to have trading restrictions lifted from my account so I called the hotline and when I asked where they would send the notification to she said my work email and I had to inform her that I no longer worked there. The whole process was incredibly unprofessional.

They didn't read a statement from HR and get your current email address?

I got nothing no communication from hr I had to call the hotline to get a copy of my last paycheck and figure everything out on my own. Was there for almost 12 years and there was no exit interview nothing just a quick call from my manager and they sent me boxes for my computer that was it. It’s been 10 weeks and I’m still waiting for the unemployment to go through the review process I have been filing each week.

You will receive an email with attachments. In there your documents will give you instructions on what you need to electronically sign etc You also will need to sign up for unemployment in order to get your sub-pay. Good luck
