Thread regarding Thomson Reuters layoffs

Lack of work

The design org work has slowed down due to lack of organization between design and product partners. Additional work we could help with is held up because other teams don’t have the time or care enough to meet to discuss details. Anyone else notice this on their teams? There is work to do but the lack of organization had led to delays and slow periods.

@swx+1m5idkby Maybe the leadership has some problems but at least designers aren’t suggesting something just because someone else does it and it looks pretty. Maybe your time would be better spent not asking to mimic what Netflix does since - news flash - our products are not a streaming service for god’s sake. Money could be better spent making our existing products look better than they did when built in 1998.

@swx+1m5idkby The intake forms are so product defines the problem and we aren't constantly asking questions and getting limitless change requests. We have a process to solving problems, it's not just sitting in a room and hearing what you would like and trying it on a computer. We talk to customers regularly with research, we talk with marketing and sales, fun fact sales is usually suggesting the direct opposite of what the customers are asking for. I agree our leader is out of his depth, I agree we are way too big, but you can't pin it all on us. Product leadership as a whole has no vision. We just keep tinkering with products that should be absorbed or phased out. 3E should've been rebuilt or sold a decade ago, why did we purchase High Q after we just launched the better version of High Q? Who decided Integration hub was ready for design without verifying it was possible to build? Why did we have 2 separate teams designing paperless proformas? Why do we keep designing and redesigning matter management? The reality is both sides have their warts and problems but it's the individuals that make decisions for us that lack vision (product) and understanding (design). Don't blame the process that worked for 5 years without issue. Blame the people hired 3 years ago that thought they knew better.

Design and Product Management are the definition of wasted money.

I should clarify that other teams outside of product are asking for design to help but then provide no details or don’t have time to meet to explain how the team can help. It just seems like most teams are too busy to have time to even ask for help or explain what they need

You’re kidding right? The Design team has a broken culture run by a leader who is way out of his league and frankly bit off more than he could chew in an attempt to bill an empire. Design wants to be part of the “3 legged” stool but they aren’t willing to come out of their ivory tower and do the real work that is required. In every meeting a go to there are typically 2-3 times the number of Design people as Product or Engineering. Design has zero appreciation for the constraints and responsibilities of the Product teams. Product has stakeholders we serve across the org (Sales, Customer Support, Professional Services, Marketing, Partnerships, Engineering oh and actual customers). If Design wants to do work stop hiding behind your intake forms and help us solve problems. The reality is Design is twice a big an Org as it should be and it’s no wonder leaders across the company are asking what we are getting for what we are paying for.

That's funny.
We (a product team) don't have access to Design for budget/resourcing reasons. Essentially we're not important enough to be approved for the privilege of working with Design.
