Monitoring badge swipes?

Are they actually tracking who is in the office 3 days a week by reporting on badge swipes? Heard this rumor, not sure if it’s true. How serious are the repercussions for not adhering to the 3-day in office mandate?

@1yqs You see a basic report that it has been requested that you see. The data behind it is quite granular and can be sliced and diced in many ways, or delivered as a very detailed report on an individual if so requested by those with the authority to do so.

Got a badge report for the first time this week, it just showed the % of people who were in 3+ days, 2 days, 1 day, or 0 days per week. It gives you nothing useful.

If WF wants to fire me for getting their job perfectly done from home, simply because they'd rather me work in an office where I'm distracted and more likely to make mistakes, that's their prerogative. I wouldn't want to be a shareholder of a company that operates that way, it's a dying business model.

"What f-cking lemmings just automatically jump to when an employer tells them to do something??"

The sort who like getting paid every two weeks I guess. They (whoever you work for) kind of tell you what you need to do in exchange for getting paid. That makes pretty much everyone a lemming by your standards I guess.

Facts:

They were able to monitor badge swipes, down to the individual location and person, way before COVID (years). it was used for seating capacity planning and to determine who had a fixed seat vs. unassigned seating.

There are no "privacy" issues about this data being available to managers. Right now it's being distributed in reports aggregated at a leader level. (e.g. x% of your team is coming in 0 times per week, y% 1-2 times per week, etc). and the message to leaders is to "continue to encourage" your group.

Have no doubt that this can and will be used eventually as a disciplinary lever and is 100% legal. Your employer sets the terms of employment subject to state, federal and local laws. there is no law or reg that says an employer can't require you to be physically present in the workplace .

@1faq+1ggYsx2M - Your “do what your employer tells you” logic worked out well for the account scandal didn’t it?

What f-cking lemmings just automatically jump to when an employer tells them to do something?? You have a brain - use it and do what’s best for you.

Fired. That’s what it’ll get you. Maybe not this month but when your employer tells you to RTO on this date that’s when you do it. Eventually they’ll weed you out and list you as a no show unless you get explicit confirmation that you can continue to WFH.

Doesn't have to be an ongoing or 'right now' analysis. Remember these reports can be pulled next quarter, next year even. Nobody knows what will be done with the data nor when.
@pap -- You are dead wrong on that. Your badge swipes, and attendance at work in general, falls under no privacy laws whatsoever. We can track every coming and going, and beyond that, every keystroke on every device we manage if we want. And you agreed to it when you became employed here. Just food for thought.

And what about those that are going in & having to swipe with a temporary badge because the replacement you ordered back in February still hasn’t arrived & you’ve followed up numerous times 🤔

No worries. I'm sure the data will be all jacked given the state of all the systems and the id1ots supporting them.

Those with shares, follow with interest. If in fact senior leaders and managers are using their time and effort on analyzing badge swipe data logs instead of, oh I don't know - being a better bank?, then it seems pretty clear how to think about current and future shares. Seems Wells resources in the last 18 months have spent a lot of time engaged in anything except better banking.

the id--ts monitoring don't need to could past 10, they just need to be able to count up to 3 as in 3 days per week they should a distinct count of your badge id.

only sr lob mgmt is getting any reporting right now and any rto enforcement is happening at the lob level. also, not every location do you have to badge out so unless they are looking at more than just badge swipes plenty of people could swipe their badge in the morning and head back home. I would also ensure that if you go to the office you at least swipe your badge once and not piggy back

That's funny, I can look at badge use data. It would be odd if I could but execs couldn't, but I only know what I can / can't do.

We were told that we didn't have to be in the office a full day if we came into the office (tech: for people complaining about tech workers not working a full day in the office...also, we have flexible hours so you might think we worked 4 hours in the office when it really was 6). That might change, but currently, that is what we were told :D

They mention counting badge swipes to gauge % of people coming in on the CPG calls. They're all looking for sure. What they do with it, who knows...

People come in but then leave early. Is 4 hours considered a day in the office?

@pap+1ggYsx2M Whether you come to work in person is a privacy issue? How deluded are you.

All managers can pull recent badge swipe data for their employees on demand, and have been able to for years. whether they know how to, or do anything with it, is clearly a WF cluster as usual.

I am working on a Bathroom Swipe Monitoring app for the Wells Fargo hackathon. It will keep track of excessive bathroom time and lock the human out if they log too much time for the day. Definitely will help the bottom line.

I seriously doubt the id-ots doing the monitoring can count past 10. Eleven and beyond and you're safe. And, there's no severance anyways since it's "self-selection" as Charlie states.

They don't look ad badhe swipes very much. They look at your logins and determine onsite vs. VPN. They have already said, don't come back, no severance plan on your way out.
You do you and live with the results/consequences.

Not all badge in - and don’t badge out! Heck the security guard opens the door for me himself so the data is faulty and not standardized across all areas - hr nightmare for a dispute to discipline to say the least….

@coo, it's amazing how much money they waste on useless sh!t. And the waste of money also on the rto fiasco with the boxing up of our belongings and the moves. I think they still have the vendors on site to handle all of the claims they have to process for missing boxes, etc. So completely stupid!

Pre-Pandemic in our group we had to be in the office four(?) days a week on average every six month period or we would lose our dedicated space.

Let's not forget that badge swipes is one way of tracking who is in the office, but another way is to track where you are logging in, assuming you have a laptop - which is most people.

Also, I have seen so many shenanigans with really paranoid mid-level managers that I would be surprised if one or two of them didn't weasel their way to get HR info on the down-low.

Maybe I'm a cynic, but this place has proven to be even worse than my most cynical assumptions at times. And it's never surprised me on the upside--- not in the last six - seven years, at least.

No, they are not. Maybe on a blanket "from the top looking down" wide basis, but that's it. Even if it is being recorded, granular information would have to be HR approved to be given out to each management/HR level, and it would have to be approved on a case by case - meaning instance by instance -basis. There is no blanket approvals for an ongoing process for that. It crosses into a lot of privacy laws and could get very stiff legally. There is zero chance that granular info is being given to management on a regular basis.

Years ago I was a victim of Wells Fargo badge swipe monitoring. As a result of badge swipe data showing that I wasn't "coming in enough", I was told I had to give up my desk at CIC and accept full time remote status. SMH.

Badge swipe monitoring has been done way before the pandemic. It was never any serious repercussions to anyone on my team other than losing their "cube" and being forced to make an appointment for a desk when you wanted to come in...

@pwj - That’s a very optimistic assessment of how fast Wells Fargo moves. With the risk of disparate treatment of employees in an approach like that, I doubt that will be the case. Although Wells has arguably done d-mber things…

According to friends that still work for wells in technology, Their group was told that they did not have enough badge swipes and that the managers needed to encourage their people to go into the office more. This shows that YES, they are monitoring badge swipes at a detailed level so that they can generate the badge swipe reports at the team level so that they can analyze it by manager and then of course they are sending that to the manager. So far, no reports of repercussions other than some finger wagging. It is also being reported by eyewitnesses that people are coming in in the am and leaving by noon they are guessing since no one seems to be in the office by afternoon.

Yes they definitely are doing that . We will have to wait and see what repercussions for non-compliance are . But it won’t be pretty … probably first warning, second warning and then dismissal ….
