Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Ford just does not get the long game

Ford had a sedan winner on its hands when it released the first gen Fusion in 2007, then the winning continued with the modest refresh of 2010 and with the move from the Mazda to Mondeo platform in 2012. Ford did NOT lose "billions" on these products. Certain lower trim levels were categorized as "loss and low" meaning loss or low profit per unit -- but the entire vehicle line did not lose money. Ford did shoot itself in the foot with the 2012 Fusion however, when quality was a major issue at launch and beyond and it was a shame because Camrys and Accords were seen as trades on Ford Dealers lots for Fusions for the first time in a long time. Then to make matters worse, Ford did not reinvest anything significant in a refresh of the 2012 design which further eroded market share. Then the dunces announced the Fusion was "dead" in Q1 2018 -- over 3 years prior to the actual run off of the product. Talk about stupid.

Ford just does not get the long game. There will always be a market for sedans, they won't be the primary driver of profit, but they will provide entry level buyers among other things, not to mention trade ins so desperately needed especially today by Ford Dealers.

I know of what I speak -- former Ford finance team member.

Putting it up for visibility (@qrr+1t0Ddstv).

Take the Government funding away and you are left with a losing company with self serving Executives/leaders.

The future of Ford looks disastrous with most of the quality engineers gone and when saying quality engineers that's about 10%. The remaining 90% of past engineers were only present for the pension $$$$$ and were below par for any engineering company. Most of the new young engineers are 80% ego and 20% talent looking to get promoted from working at home and playing video games.

90% Ford engineers have always pilfered from others ideas to make it a cheap/worst design.

@1dwp+1t7o0e2p I saw a Mondeo wagon at the PDC fuel pumps a few years back. I initially thought it was an Audi and pulled closer to get a better look. Immediately I wanted one but we bottom-feeder NA customers don't deserve this. It feels like fear of success in some ways.

Maybe loosing money on them... My2009 with the base 2.3 engine is still going strong at 190K. I don't plan to stop driving it until something major fails or I hit a deer.

My buddy has a 2010 with over 300K on it... again base 2.5 engine..

They still get 30mpg... My 2017 Escape with its second 2.0L EcoBust engine is lucky to get 20mpg around town and its trans is always looking for a different gear. Its zippy with that turbo but it aint sippy on the gas..

We missed the boat not bringing the mondeo wagon to the NA market... and we messed up with the turbo engines. The 2.5 NA engine was best thing Mazda and Ford ever made.

The margins were so low that when you factor in well factors we were losing money. I agree it wasn't in the billions, but it was significant enough that it didn't make sense to keep designing, making and selling Fusions. When you make billions on trucks and SUVs it's difficult to justify breaking even (if that) on sedans.

And you are missing the elephant in the room, BEVs. They had to cut no your low profit models so they could take those savings for the billions they'd lose on BEVs. The whole move to BEVs is where the short-sighted problem really came about.

@1jzr+1t7o0e2p - You hit the nail on the head. Ford is not leading anything positive. Ford doesn't have a vision ... no marquee products to spotlight. We're too busy reacting to what everyone else is doing to lead anything. They speak of the next gen EV like it's going to be some sort of earth shattering product, but we all know it'll be all about software features, and that's about it. Ford couldn't keep a secret if it meant world peace, so you know the talk is just an effort to buy time until they can figure out what to do. EV's are basically rolling cell phones, with software driving hardware and vice versa. The cars themselves su-k. They lack character. There's nothing special about a digital rendering of a control panel. Look at the $100k Tesla Cyber Truck everyone at Ford is gaga over. In good conditions it costs $75 and takes an hour and a half to charge for a range of less than 300 miles in a vehicle that lacks class and quality, and only offers "look at me" character because it technically doesn't offer its occupants much of anything special. Our cell phones, tablets, and pc's do nearly as much to entertain their users. I don't know whats wrong with so many people, but if I'm gonna pay $100k for a vehicle, I want physical gages, switches, and bezels that are made for the car, that require creativity, physical materials, and craftsmanship to create. I want a vehicle that screams performance or exudes style, something with character, something that catches the eye when people see it, and I'm not talking about a fancy, high priced version of a product we mass produce, like a mustang dark horse or Raptor R. Those are cool, but they aren't gonna keep the company viable. That's where Jimmy is failing - he has racing tunnel vision. Ford needs leaders with vision that everyone else can get behind, and they need to move towards that vision regardless of what everyone else is doing.

Ford's strength isn't being innovative or a first-mover into a competitive landscape.

We excel at copying a proven winner and then manufacturing it better / cheaper / faster.

It's in our DNA.

Wake up!!!

Ford has never been a smart company but is filled with self serving people starting at the top that are all talk and it's even worse without pensions.
