Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Fired Last Week for something Months Ago

Last week, out of the blue my manager said they were firing me for non-compliance with the in-office hybrid model… in 2023. I heard from a coworker there that he read in his teams about people being laid off last week.

A formal warning about being below model was sent to me last month Feb. 2024, which I acknowledged and have since then been on target.

I have always done my job. It seems to me I have been fired during a series of layoffs which occurred and they went back half a year ago as grounds for termination without severance. I know as a positive fact of others who were below model last year which are now still employed, I was even told of the others being below model last year by my manager. If it is grounds for termination why are the individuals being picked and chosen, and why is it happening only many months later? The rest of my team was then told I was not complying with the in-office model to make it sound as if it was a current infraction. Extremely sc-mmy business practice. Has anyone else dealt with this?

RTO was crystal clear to all, even the most minimally engaged employees.

You played a dangerous game and you lost. You were so sure that all of your attempts to game the badge readers, the extra swipes, the in and out parking, etc.

After all that there should be termination for cause, if only to set an example.

This was an example of a life lesson that children have learned in childhood for 2,500 years at least. What is happening in our society today where adults fail to raise their children?

Child…. You are now learning a valuable work life lesson that most Boomers learned in their childhood and early teens. For your sake… don’t miss it again.

You’re welcome.

I was among the very first in the vanguard to return to RTO full time. Sorry, It’s a boomer ethic and I love to work. To this day I still can’t believe that so many of my supposed “coworkers” weren’t even reliable enough to show up intermittently for RTO, and would disappear for great chunks of the day. Every day.

I left for this reason and this reason only, and couldn’t be happier. I’ve always pulled far more than my weight and the slacking on my supposed team was seriously aggravating.

As the saying goes, “if you want something to get done, give it to the busy guy”. I was the busy guy for over four decades and you wouldn’t believe how many people ask me for references. Amusingly, many became upset when I turned them down. I’m not about to ruin my rep for a slacker with no work ethic.

At the risk of being pedantic, the Exco gave guidelines and management chains pushed them to all. Finally when they saw that employees were blowing off the communications, and later disregarding RTO aggressively, they put the hammer down… which as far as I can tell is a GOOD thing.

They tried to treat us as adults, but from the people on this board it screams petulant self absorbed children.

You broke it, you bought it. And you ruined it for the hard workers as well.

Adults don’t spend the whole work day spamming every thread just to antagonize people especially when they don’t work here.

You anti RTO Refuseniks played a dangerous game, bet badly that you could win, and you lost. You did manage however to surface your revolt to a list of upcoming firings.

Firings are termination for cause, no package.

Must be tough for a child to first experience adult consequences in a real adult job..

Pro Tip: Don’t blow off all of the rules for coming to work and expect to be remain employed.

The very fact that you didn’t learn this lesson by age 16 says it all.

Only petulant children.

@kfus, yeah, professionals have a really hard time when they're treated like teenagers instead of adults.

Unfortunately for your theory, our petulant children at the Bank started this war with their mass hissy fit against showing up to do the jobs for which they applied and were hired to perform.

Theft of time and toxic arrogance.

Nobody is hired to work 35 hours per week. 37.5 is the least and honestly everybody works a minimum of 40 hours.

And just what is the common thread amongst all of these horror stories?

Hint… so called “employees” who won’t come in and do their jobs. Why yes, I do believe that fully explains the situation.

@qmam. I was hired to work 35 hours a week. But then I had to start joining 8am meetings with offshore even though I had to support operations until 5:30pm. So if anyone isn't living up to our employment agreement, it's BNY Felon.

Adults don’t spend their days in strategizing ways to get out of working the job for which they were hired to do. If you all demonstrated even a fraction of the ingenuity which you displayed when gaming the system in your actual jobs you’d be Managing Directors.

Oh how the mighty RTO Refuseniks have fallen.

Those glorious days of flipping the bird to the man. Refusing to come to work. Badge games, reswipes driving in to swipe on the way to the bar , in and out and bragging about techniques, feeling invincible.

and now…. Who, me? Violating RTO, who?

No there weren’t “so many nuances to the RTO, that it was very unclear, and different departments were telling people different things, so to say everybody knew the policy is completely fabricated…”

The message was simple and it still is. Come into work and do your jobs.

What did people think would happen after those glorious days of flipping the bird to RTO requirements? Did they not believe that management would eventually sift through the data to find the bad apples?

We were told 2 days a week because of the limit space and now we all received a warning in oracle we had to send for review, which got denied. So now what? Looks like all of VF and WEBO folks about to be let go either for RTO or moving our jobs to Poland, India and Florida. They are letting people go cause of the RTO so they won’t have to provide sub pay. Stop putting in all this effort when VF/Webo folks will all be let go this year or next year. My group received desk number where we need to sit when we come in. This RTO is a joke half the people next to me come in for an hour and leave, how is this allowed and not reviewed?

Post ID: @2kob+1rBs4vC3

2 days a week you can have desk sharing, 3 days a week you can, but only if you sit on each other’s laps in my location. But I’m sure they’ll remedy that with their layoffs and firing and moving jobs to India and Florida and Poland.

@meb So your theory is that there aren’t enough seats despite the massive layoffs hat you’re complaining about?

Any theory on who stole all of the desks and cubicles in Pittsburgh so that there are no seats?

What vivid imaginations. You simply cannot make this stuff up.

It always strikes me as odd that employees don’t understand that firing for cause will not give them Sub (or, as they mistakenly call Severance).

Well I guess that there is common sense and this is learning it the hard way.

Yes, this was the guy who was terminated for cause and was only told to send back equipment. This is an extreme case and obviously it was a termination with cause.

Wrong again 41. They were anything BUT clear about RTO requirements.
First it was 2 days a week...if the week has a holiday you don't need to come in at all....
Then it was 3 days, 2 if you had a day off, 1 if you had 2 off.
Now they say it's not 3 days but 60% of your possible work days in a 4 week period.
Normal would be 12 out of 20. 11 of 20 is no good at 55% but as we've proven 10 out of 19 is perfectly fine at 55.56%.
I'm not complaining about that, just proving that it isn't what they ( and you by default ) say it is.

No, the message was always clear. Come in to work and stop the games. Our bad apples who resisted working doomed their own jobs.

Fortunately the Bank does not give any reference beyond a confirmation that you were employed here.

You’re not alone. Many employees disregarded RTO requirements, and some of them militantly so. Recall all of the posts from the anti-RTO crew? All of the bragging about the badge games to get over? All of the efforts to appear in the office, etc.

Why now? Because quite a few played these games… just imagine how hard it is to sift through all of that data, as it was gathered during a period that was not at all automated. But now they’re analyzing it and let the chips fall where they may.

My sympathies are always with the good apples who worked hard, followed RTO requirements and we’re honest. . I’ve been troubled by slackers who game the system.

My advice to all of the slackers who tried to game the system and even bragged about their shenanigans is to start a job search immediately before you’re terminated without a package. They’re still combing through the data.

Getting fired has to be traumatic, RIF is bad enough.
I’m sorry but you didn’t follow the policy and they writing is on the wall a new sheriff is in town and isn’t a softy.
You mention others and the fact they didn’t get fired. You don’t know the details nor if they might be soon.
Hopefully you have learned something and will find a new job quickly.

But you haven’t been doing your job, part of which is a requirement to come into work. It’s actually a priority at Robin has been pushing very hard for two years.

By your own actions, you’ve chosen to self terminate yourself. And there were many warnings and metrics along the way.

People normally learn this at 16 years old when they first learn about clocking in and out.

Honestly don’t understand how our hires are unprepared for real world work.

Every anti - RTO warrior is actually sc--wing their team mates by leaving them with more work and stress. The slackers all understand the rules but believe that they can game them.

Well after almost two years of this a lot of people are going to wish that they had honored the requirements of the job when they were hired.

I feel more sorry for the rock solid employees that are left to handle the load.

As a I’ve been writing, Robin wants his employees coming into work and all of the RTO avoidance schemers have been playing a very dangerous game for a very long year and a half.

Don’t think of it as being displaced. Think of all of the time off that you enjoyed while disobeying RTO.

Honestly it’s not fair to the hard working employees who followed RTO requirements.
