Recruiters asking for DOB during initial screening

I’ve talked with three recruiters this week in the Houston area, and all three have asked for my DOB up-front in the screening process. I called one out on it and got ghosted.

Are they filtering candidates based on age now or what? Interested in hearing if this has happened to anyone else. Can’t say the names of the companies, but you’ll see their offices if you drive on beltway 8 near I-10.

@3dhd Pretty sure that white guys are getting away with discrimination on a daily basis. I’m also pretty sure that Exxon is whiter than a field of gardenias. You can check this yourself by walking around the office with your eyes open.

It’s technically not illegal to ask your age in a job interview (I know, I was surprised too), but it’s a huge red-flag, and most places don’t ask it because it gives the candidate a reason to sue them if they don’t get an offer.

2xbw+1pXlgPPF businesses hire based ONLY on criteria that use to be illegal but now, it is still technically illegal but it is only illegal if it is a white guy doing it

Also beware of the question “what year did you graduate high school?”

A certain manufacturer in the Pearland area with its headquarters in East Asia likes to ask candidates this during interviews. I guess nobody told them they can be sued for this under the right circumstances in the U.S.

Whenever I'm asked about my age I throw them for a loop by saying 8, which usually shuts them up.

For the ones that ask for further clarification, I tell them my 8 inches up their unmentionable, if they keep asking illegal questions.

There’s some recruiting contractors asking up-front for SSNs too, the stated reason being to “prevent duplication of candidates”.

Won’t say the name directly, but they’re know to have a “worldwide edge” and work exclusively with O&G companies. Never give anyone your SSN during the screening process (shady AF).

BTW, EM asks your age when applying. They ask about your citizenship and the date it was granted - in other words, DOB.

That's 100% illegal. Someone needs to stand up to them and call them out on it.

100% some companies don’t want to hire anyone with more than 7 years of experience, cause they’d rather pay less for someone younger…

Fu-k them. Lie about your age. What the heck. It's illegal to ask for someone's age. It's called age discrimination. So just lie to them.

Seems like everyone is to supposed to be 25 years old with 20 years of experience.

It’s ridiculous.

Recruiters and interviewers are not supposed to ask about age but find ways around it. They really should not look too far back in work history. Anything more than 15 years is probably not relevant.

It’s a double edge sword. Age discrimination or not having enough experience. Then you see the XOM employees who move jobs ever 1 or 2 years. No depth of skills simply make them unemployable elsewhere.
