Thread regarding Optum layoffs

Pay grade range for 28 grade, looking to join Optum, looking for sound advice

I work for a company on the west coast and was offered a position at Optum for grade 28 at 115K for a senior analyst type role. It's just slightly more than what I am making now, but feel like in my current department I am on the chopping block. I was reading recent Optum posts talking about salary being a determining factor (vs performance) for making layoff decisions.

Does anyone know if 115K is at the low, middle, or top end of the pay scale for grade 28?

If it's near the top, that makes me nervous so just looking for a little education from someone who knows. I am in a bad situation at my current job, but understand I may be entering a new one as well so either way I am not overjoyed, but would like to remain employed so I may be playing the 'short term' game here, but just am thinking about what works best for me right at this moment.

the pay scale is based on state and area, and job description, for a Proj Mgr, in CA san fran area, the 28 grade is 91K to 171K, grade 27 hiring in now is about 142K for Sr Tech Proj Mgr , but higher if you know what they need (date april 2022)

I make more than 115 as a 28 in the Midwest. Ask for more than 115 since your cost of living is probably high.

I literally could have written word for word @1qoq+13eoqgXB‘s post. 28 here, happy with job, love my boss and team. I’ve been laid off in the past, big companies do that. Like she said also, I have a web friend who has been laid off 3 times in the past several years. No job is guaranteed. The salary they are offering you is not on the high end, but mid market, as a 28 can make up to around $140k. Take the job, you will be fine.

Dont stress. If you are good at what you so, if you hit high end on 28, you can jump to 29 where you will be on low end. Take the job.

That would be high end for 28 depending on the area you live in.

Enjoy your role, focus less on the pay grade. If your role is fulfilling and you feel relatively secure where you're at, stay. The layoffs are happening but I feel it depends on your sector. Some are safer than others. Job security is more important to me than wage.

Indians, Filipinos, and Irish have universal healthcare. Doesn’t matter if they get laid off. What about the us workers?!

What happened to all the singing of Happy , smiley shirts, the skits, the shout outs to the execs, the corporate family propaganda, the script Robot voiced readings at town halls? You mean that all that corporate family live was just empty words?

And we all know that 1%-2% doesn’t cut it for cost of living. Back in 2000 life was good on 32k I could get an apartment easily go out to eat all I wanted and save and have play money. Now it’s like the salaries 40k higher yet my quality of life wasnt there. Life costs money. So in the grand skeem of things, I got poorer working there not richer. Quality of life financially as well as emotionally went downhill there. Same with health! Get out while you still have a pulse so you can have a better standard of living elsewhere. Don’t die in your cubicle trying to achieve their impossible metrics. Find a company out there who will “show you the money” and mean it! Life is better away from UHG

1-2-% is annual cost of living inflation adjustment NOT a raise.

I was a grade level 28 and made $116k and was laid off. I was told I was the highest paid employee on my team and that was why. Loved my job and loved the people I worked with! Thought that was where I would retire- but leadership had a different plan. Mass lay-offs round after round in 2019 and more to come in 2020. Totally unstable environment- I would look elsewhere for employment.

Average merit raise for greater than a 3 of 5 rating in my grade 28 has been 1.to 1.5% for last 3 years with NO BONUS, so think twice as this is not keeping up with the cost of living. And there is ZERO job security with all the layoffs. They think nothing of laying off folks hired months earlier, including on December 23 as they just did.
I'd look elsewhere....................................

some teammates enjoy corporate slavery others don't. the fact that you can be let go for no reason any reason would make one very leery especially if you like to eat.

I am a 28 and love my job and team. No issues here and no long demanding unreasonable hours. It really does make a difference what team you are on and the expectations they have for you coming in. That being said, I am not under the illusion that I could not be laid off. It happens. If you look at the layoff website there are lots of big companies constantly laying off jobs. I have been laid off in a completely different industry than healthcare when needs changed. A friend works in technology/web and has been laid off from 3 different jobs over the past 7 years. It is all a gamble, do what is best for you.

Unless your desperate, no way. They will use you, abuse you, talk about "values" "family" etc.penny raises, or told to give 3s to avoid paying what your owed. This is a typical American corporation where you just a line item.

One thing to consider is that the healthcare industry has a politics problem that will not go away. Med 4 all or a public option is going to put major pressure on the industry for the foreseeable future. I would go to a better industry without the threat of its demise overhanging everything it does. No matter how far fetched it may be.

Uhg has very large ranges for grade levels past 26. Especially in high cost cali. very few actual levels after 30 which is director level. If it's not much better than where you are currently you may be better off negotiating or waiting for a better offer. Don't expect much opportunities once your in and the grade levels above you will come with a target next time cuts are looked at.

When I started with the company, my friend warned me that the company has no problem with ending a program or role. With that said, dont expect that your ever safe, if its financially better for the company to get rid of you they will. When I applied, I viewed it as a contract job and I still do. I think if you go in with that mindset, you wont be as surprised if your role ended, and you can continue to network and possibly seek something else in the future.

Pay for 28 and below is location based. So, it sounds about right for Universal Care Nation of California and West Coast

Mid market for a 28 is 82k - 120k. Highest is 130k. Good luck :)

Expect 90k to 110k for 28. I'd pass unless you join a very modern team, everyone else is doing busy work.

I would pass on that position. Optum is firing American employees left and right and relocating the positions to the Philippines because they can get 2+ Philippine employees for the price of one American.

If you’re in the interview process now I would assume that’s the middle for that position and salary grade, Optum never offers at the top of the range. Job security is definitely a concern but if you’re miserable in your current job it might be worth a shot here. I would caution you that you should expect to avg. 50 hour work weeks in that pay group...
