Speaking at the Future of Everything conference hosted by the Wall Street Journal, Ford CEO Jim Farley said the transition to next-generation digital and electric cars requires in many cases a different kind of talent his company doesn’t yet have and will not be able to fully source internally.

“This is the hard part: I’m not sure we can upskill everyone; I don’t think they’re going to make it,” Farley said. “There’s a new skill set we’re going to need, and I don’t think I can teach everyone—it will take too much time. So there is going to be disruption in this transition.”

Student loan forgiveness is the wrong answer, unless you want to see another increase in the inflation rate. The better answer is to eliminate federally guaranteed student loans and shift over to the schools themselves providing the loans and make educational loans dischargeable again in bankruptcy.

BTW - it wasn't Reagan that signed off on the change in bankruptcy laws (unless he rose up from the grave!) The reforms of 2005 were signed into Law by GWB, and I agree that he deserves derision for having done so.

College used to be free or close to it and only qualified students were accepted. That was until Reagan ruined it and turned colleges into profit centers and made student loans ineligible for bankruptcy. Thanks, Ronnie - I can feel it trickling down alright.

Look at how much it costs to get a journalism degree at any university - then look at the average salary for journalists - it'll never pay off.

And universities have no incentive to lower their costs so they won't. They'll gladly hand out loans to 18 year olds that will stay with them for 30 years. When factoring in 30 years of interest, students are paying the equivalent of mortgages to go to college these days.

This country needs to make student loans bankruptcy eligible immediately. Then watch how quickly universities stop approving teenage adults for loans.

@2uvv No, parents need to stand up to universities so they cut their tuition and tell their kids to stop getting degrees in feminist studies, english literature, music theory and general studies. Dont agree? Take a look at the endowments of the schools and tell me there isnt a racket going on.

It sounds like you all work for leaders that are not implementing these DEI initiatives effectively.

I am an LL4 with a fairly large team of employees beneath my umbrella. I have been implementing DEI techniques for years now and have had nothing but positive reviews from executive leadership.

I always pair Black men and White women together for projects. I find that these two groups work extremely well together and are both very open to trying new things when facing challenges.

I group all of the othe people of color and s--ualities together. They bring such different perspectives and arrive at unique solutions that would never have been reached by white male teams.

I give these minority groups work that is never too difficult. And I always ensure that they present in front of senior leadership to ensure that they have the right connections should they want to climb the corporate ladder later in their careers.

I always group the white males with each other. I give this group the real challenging projects. Nothing flashy or attention getting, but the kind of work that really keeps this company running. I always personally communicate their results to senior leadership and cascade the feedback accordingly.

I have received the greatest feedback during my reviews with my leaders. And the teams all seem to be enjoying their experiences. I hope that you all have the opportunity to work in teams like this.

The simple fact of the matter is that the best and brightest are the ones that will fix the mess, not the people who are in their positions because of the color of their skin or their se@ual preferences. 1qsl+1mtKXobE Sorry to burst your bubble. But Jim Farley is one of those who do not have the proper skill set to be a leader or a CEO. He is hated by the troops. Second he proclaims to be a car guy. Yet since he hired in we lost market share and also left the car segments. So now Toyota and Nissan will pick up all that business.
Third he always blames everybody else for the company failure. Again He has been in senior position since 09. Never takes any blame for anything.
The guy is not a leader. Not a visionary. He is a YES Man to the Ford Family. Bobble head.

Mr Farley has done an exceptional job bringing our Ford family to the top. He announced that we lag far behind the competition when it comes to DEI. Since then, I have seen huge changes across all areas of Ford. It is by far the most diverse this company has ever been. And this will lead us right to the top of the competition.

@1wml the interesting thing is that most people are delusional about their skills and contributions especially at a company like Ford where “fake accomplishments” and “pointless unprofitable projects” exist only for bolstering some LL career are the norm.

Putting pen to paper and having knowledge of actual contributions by individuals one could eliminate 75% of the Ford salaried workforce and management and actually increase productivity. Of course that means the CEO and his cronies would be on the chopping list.

JF will do what BF told him - offshore 85% of the US salaried workforce, with whatever platitudes/sound bites needed to justify them. Then JF will “retire” to spend more time with his family.

The automotive industry is looking for direction. Between work from home to skillset, they're trying to mesh to become the future company going forward. I work in EV and AV that services ALL OEM, so let me share. Each of you OEMs, you are not special. You think you are, but if any of you went away, there's many others to pick up the slack. We service, all OEMs. We know your darkest secrets. IF GM disappeared, it wouldn't matter. If Ford disappeared, it wouldn't matter. If Stellantis disappeared, it wouldn't matter. If Honda, etc, etc.

First and foremost, there aren't enough of us, both engineers and designers. Not enough of us across all of the market. If you want us, especially designers, be prepared to pay on par or more, than your engineers. It's a multi faceted skillset that can not easily be learned nor taught easily. It can't be hired out 3rd world unless you want disastrous results.

Ford in latest SEC filing is diluting shares by minting 30 millions shares worth 350 million for retention compensation. Talking reduce costs by 2 billion. That's 17 percent right there. Yet spending 350 million. There is a reason the stock price does not go up. Ford does not believe in stock repurchases. Rather funnel money to the dividend due to B shares and hand out money to the LL ranks.
