Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

They will slowly give layoffs until June?

How come no WARN notice? The last WARN notice stated ending in Jan 2021. They just going to slowly layoff people until June to stay below the WARN numbers?

This interests me too. I would not be surprised because I heard from a friend from another company that a very similar thing was happening to them. Companies try to avoid WARN, I just don’t understand how that’s really possible?

Considering the org chart they laid out and massive staffing in the Asia and India logically one can guess more domestic layoffs will occur. Think H&M fast fashion, move resources, save money, feed the stockholders. Some VP should be ashamed that she copied someone else's org structure idea, she knows who she is, she is also "IN" with "CEO".

In my group, all women were laid off. Now how does that look?! Nike isn’t progressive at all. Their maxims ring hollow. They strut and talk big, but their actions never ever follow.

Quit crying. You realize that corporate is all about financials and press.
Corporate avoids hiring of minorities because If a lay-off is to occur that involves minorities it has the possibility of becoming a class action lawsuit.
Lawyers reach out to all minorities within arms distance to their client to build a case. Corporate would rather avoid the issue altogether by keeping their distance. We have had a president and now a VP of color. Everything is possible with hard work and determination and in this day and age with AI that accounts for every position in every field. Things done change (yes it’s supposed to say done) it been happening for over 100 plus years and a DI team isn’t going to change anything.

I never said there were not people that were racist. There are. It sounds like what you are saying is everyone is racist that is why you are such the victim.

Is it soo telling that I get to make the decision? I am a worker bee U band but yes I get to interview openings in our team and provide feedback. And like I said the person gets reviewed on the basis of their qualifications.

perhaps you are like @4luy and think I should evaluate some races differently so we can ensure equity?

4sav Look up the difference between equality and equity.

@4sav

We can't pretend this stuff didn't happen by deciding "past is the past". And oh man, your assertion that yout get to make this decision is quite telling.

It's the same mentality that excuses the continued thread of discrimination and racism because slavery was abolished and civil rights were added to the constitution. I really did have a manager at Nike who proclaimed his frustration at BLM, citing that slavery was ended 150+ years ago.

@4oqu

When it comes time to evaluate somebody for a job, how their past generations were treated has zero impact. Equality of opportunity is key. Equality of outcome if foolish and most of the time racist.

@2mmz

You do realize generations of bigotry and discrimination have left certain classes of people years behind others due to lack of opportunities, don't you? Do you honestly feel women and people of color are just naturally not as qualified as a caucasian male? Yes, this cultural shift will leave many of those who benefitted from privilege with fewer opportunities. That just means you probably need to just work a little harder.

@2mmz, totally agree. Is that how Nike sees it though? They recently announced connecting executives compensation to diversity of hires/employees’ mix 🤔

2YZR How about no discrimination.
How about hiring and firing people based on their qualifications and skill set. Not the color of their skin and a target # to prove to people your a ‘fair’ company. This is no just Nike this is ALL of Corporate
I am all for diversity and fairness but hiring people based on there race is not the way to do it.

Would you prefer the regular old discrimination?

@1utz, agreed and that is what I was told. People are tired and are unsure of what is happening, so I can understand the various narratives being crafted here. Best of luck to everyone done and to those who remain.

These most recent layoffs are part of the original reorg. The core parts of Nike’s business had to be reorged first before the supporting functions impacted this week could be downsized too.

I know that goes against the narrative some of you have crafted in your heads but it’s the truth.

Odd that these layoffs happen as they roll out their diversity targets. Wonder the racial / gender make up of all employees laid off since 2020. Probably a discrimination case there, but that would go against the social movement so lawyers don’t want to touch it.

All Nike would have to do is make up an "unforeseeable business circumstance" to avoid the 60 requirement as long as they inform their workers. There's not much you can do about it unless you all want to get together and sue Nike. Good luck.
