Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Copy your data

Copy any data you want to keep off your laptop right now. When you get laid off they will tell you that they are monitoring your systems and copying data could endanger your severance. It may already be too late.

@1sqm+1tQaLvzr correct. Anyone spreading anything is lying. Don't do anything stupid, just follow what you are told.

That is a terrible idea. If you have truly personal data, make a sharepoint folder called "Personal", put your stuff in it and share it with an external account. Don't dump it on thumb drives or external drives.

You could make a sad personal situation into a legally difficult one.

Got laid off today and they let you take personal information before they block your full access to the computer.

People you've got problems we don't have. In the EU our rights are better protected. I can copy anything on an external media and only Internal only or restricted items will actually get you a call from the IT helpdesk asking whatcha doing. Which is normal. But copying everything else is fine.
I do it all the time for various reasons. Downloading a driver that I need to put on a disconnected system, pics I've taken with the cam, datasheets or decks I made for customer facing purposes to have them always with me...

And by law Dell must leave access to ALL of the PC in case we go to court, so I don't even bother because if we part ways, they won't see the laptop before we get things settled. And this is legal here. If the block access to the system, wipe it or break it, it's them who are in deep trouble.

Reading the stories I see from our buddies in the US hurts because the sh---y labour laws over there allow companies to treat people like dirt. You're expendable no matter how high you are in the org. That's sad and indecent for an economy this size.

I worked for a US team for a couple of years and you could read the stress and fear every first monday of a quarter. This is why working over there really looks more like living the totalitarian dream. No sh-t...everybody bending and ducking to not take a hit by standing out, noone speaks up, has ideas anymore, innovates by fear of failing and get sacked. You've regular random purges with St-lin sending to death even the closest allies...while upholding completely communist traditions like 'Manager day' where you write a card to you manager to praise him for his leadership (this one made me freak out tbh). And all people looking up to Michael mumbling 'what are you doing to us and this company dear leader' while getting sla-ghtered like Russians soldiers that are dying like flies in Ukraine for nothing because noone cares about them....they're just expendable.

Dude I'm not making this up - that's Dell now. No more the dream company to work for, you're just a wage slave and high paid IT jobs are getting scarce.

No need for scaring everyone on here. The company knows most of us use our work laptops as personal devices, so they do understand. You will receive instructions on how to transfer your data securely and compliantly.
If you are investigated, you have nothing to worry about as long as you’ve not tried to remove sensitive information. They are very reasonable people in their approach, just follow the rules and instructions everyone and you’ll be good.

I had an investigation started on me because some dip$#!+ in internal support copied all data to a USB before reimaging. Got the call from security during a period I was pretty sure I was going to get the ax and a hefty severance ... which I did.
Fortunately I was able ro recall that incident and get it cleared. Would have been sc--wed otherwise.

I thought we received an email that from July 2024 , USB ports on laptop are disabled for external storage devices. They sent the email after they disabled it. I am in ISG Engineering.

I have my own laptop but it's not a Dell LMAO. Does anybody actually buy Dell gear on here?

You copy ANY data to an external device and you get an email from Dell Security to join a teams call and walk through every single file extracted. They will have the SN of the thumb drive or external device and if you can't produce it, your severance WILL be impacted.

This ship has sailed.

Yes, I am too poor to buy my own personal laptop to use since I work at Dell.

Honestly just take pictures with your personal phone if you have anything that would benefit you in your next role (i.e. tech profiles, competitive quote buildouts/pricing )

Dell doesn't care about you. Take it with you in a manner they can't prove. Take your severance. And then go win the deals at wherever you land next.

To what ‘data’ are you referring? If you are only copying personal data (pay stubs, proof of recognition, training records, etc.) you should be fine.
If you are suggesting anyone copy confidential company data, think again.

Why do you have personal data on a company computer? Are you too poor to buy your own personal laptop to use?

it seems as though they have locked down the ability to send emails to a domain that isn't dell.com outside of normal business hours. Just tried on Sunday afternoon and was not allowed.

If you are on the list for this next round they have already disabled your USB ports. Only way now is to copy it into a OneDrive folder and send a download link for that folder to your personal email.

Do not use an encrypted messaging app that has end-to-end encryption to send files to another device. It is not possible for network-based DLP and CASB tools to see end-to-end encrypted messages sent this way. So don’t do that.

Also, don’t use any of those cloud apps that use certificate pinning, which prevents forensic tools from inspecting the content.

They already monitor all data removal via USB and OneDrive shares. Have been for a few years now.

In my experience, Dell will perform forensic analysis of computers. If you take files with information that belongs to Dell, you will likely have to give up severance pay. This has happened to a former colleague. If you have pictures or any personal files, copy them to a personal drive. Anything else, is not worth it.

I would strongly recommend against taking any sensitive data with you. Dell is not a forgiving company and they are doing these layoffs to reduce cost. If they can, they will come after you.

I think every laptop handed back is scanned for data that was removed from it
