Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Working here is depressing

  • checked out colleagues
  • people not responding to slack or WebEx
  • no real culture
  • no actual career growth
  • people just warming seats and biding their time.

I made a mistake joining and regret it everyday. Place is absolutely sh1t and I know I’m trapped here because of the economy and job market. Feel like ending myself everyday rather than deal with the sh1t show here

I hear what you are all saying about the trades, but it really requires a shift in the way we think.

I went to high school in the mid 90s. And at each high school, it felt like they really pushed college - not even community college, but universities - and belittled skilled trades. As though skilled trades or any type of first responder academies were 'beneath' university education.

And they didn't even mention military (even though they have plenty of STEM and 'white collar' roles) or general labor career paths.

It was like 'if you don't get a bachelor degree then you have failed'. It may be difficult to change some people's way of thinking.

@1qwm+1qIVCIIv is exactly right!

Look at any internet forum and you will see that skilled trades people are bringing in 100k, 250k, and even up to half a million dollars each year. And that's for independents. If they own their own business and have employees they can bring in a million per year or more!

That is way more than most college degrees will earn.

That's why it's so important that you all encourage your children to go into the skilled trades.

I can't because I already have my four kids on a stem track to become physicians and that requires medical school. Thank goodness my investments and rental properties will pay for all that! But if they weren't on their STEM / medical track, I would be telling them to become elevator technicians - there is major money in the trades!

@lmk+1qIVCIIv - you are kidding, right? The skilled trades I know at Wayne Assembly brought in $230K last year (with overtime). Pay ZERO in health insurance and living the dream (Nice house, cottage up north, boating in the summer, snowmobiling in the winter, nice cars, cruise ship in the Caribbeans once a year, you name it, they got it).

College is overrated, salaried workforce like us is full of stress, no OT, check email evening and weekends, meetings early in the morning with AP, meetings late in the afternoon with Mexico, etc. People retire, they don't backfill, the job is moved or gets dumped on us.

I disagree, I'm so passionate and fired up about our mission and serving our customers. I think its so cool to carry on Ford's legacy of engineering the future.

Have any of you considered getting into the skilled trades?

You can make 40k to 60k.

It might be a tough adjustment from 100k+ engineering jobs, but it is a very good option.

Our country needs more skilled trades. If you aren't interested for yourselves, you should all encourage your children away from universities and into trade schools.

Your job doesn't define you. Step back and take a look at what you have. It's likely a lot. Save your money and build up 10-15k in savings. You'll feel a lot better, and I know its not easy to actually do. Ford is a sh-t show, but so is every other major publicly traded company similar in size. If you need a change, I'd downgrade your lifestyle, take a job with a smaller company, and see how you feel. Lots less pressure, less rat race, it might be good for you. No job is worth your sanity and peace. Take care.
