7 simple steps to start a union

  1. Talk to your coworkers.

The first step is straightforward: Talk to your coworkers and find out what they think about the workplace.

  1. Find a union and build an organizing committee.

A traditional union—sometimes called a trade union or labor union—will ideally have the staff, resources, and expertise to kickstart the process and represent you in negotiations.

  1. Build support.

Lead organizers put together a list of all the workers at the store so they could make a plan to talk with everyone.

  1. Sign cards, file for recognition, and hold an election.

Once you’ve built enough support to go public, the next step is to sign union cards indicating that you would like to be represented by the union you’re working with for the purposes of collective bargaining. You or your union representative then files the union cards with the NLRB, usually electronically.

  1. Prepare yourselves for union busting and retaliation.

Once management knows you’re organizing, keep an eye out for union busting. Hired firms may train leaders and middle managers to spread misinformation about how unions operate or instill fear in workers through retaliatory tactics.

  1. Form a bargaining committee and negotiate a contract.

Once you’ve won an election, it’s time to actually negotiate with your bosses about what changes you want to see. The bargaining unit—everyone who will be in the union—should first elect a bargaining committee. These rank-and-file workers will be the key group to represent the unit in meetings with management.

  1. Make a plan to maintain momentum.

Prepare yourself for a potentially arduous process. You might spend months organizing, and then many more months negotiating before you reach that coveted contract. The average time it takes for employers and new union workers to finalize their first collective bargaining agreement is 465 days, according to a Bloomberg Law analysis.

@1vdt It is actually 11% now, 3% the next three years and 5% in the final year. It averages to 6% but is very front loaded, those who come in next year will only see 3% raises. However, you failed to mention an even more important provision they added to their annual compensation - automatic COLA increases. So the raise being given is actually a freakin raise!

@1tai you're arguing an effective 6% raise per year for 5 years is a bad deal?

Beats the he-l out of the <2% WF gives every year.

Only 7 steps? You missed a few.

8: When it's bone chilling cold and you can't hover over the fire barrel because the city doesn't allow it, remember to dress in layers as you walk the picket line.

9: Always have your wildcat strike kit ready.

10: Learn the definition of "poor performance " and "just cause ". Two reasons why you are SOL and the union cannot help you.

Yes the UAW finally settled their new contract. They will get a pay raise that is probably overdue. Unfortunately that raise is spread over 5 years.

Enjoy the kool-aid

Oh, it's so cute when the uneducated post internet pablum.

OP, while you are at it, why don't you go for it and include free sprinkles and glitter for every oppressed team member (sorry, employee).

Now, wake up from your nap little one.

The whole tone and tenor of the MRA cr-p has been that we're lambs being lead to sla-ghter. Charlie and co will be responsible for so many deaths of despair. Then again, they don't care.

Your union posts are annoying. Enough. Go talk to your coworkers and let us know how it goes.

If you hear of union talk, report it to your manager. If you get your hands on a petition or signup sheet, hold onto it so you can" read it in private", then turn it into your manager.

Unions destroy companies. Job killers in the long run.
