Thread regarding JPMorgan Chase & Co. layoffs

Returning to JPMC... or not

I was with JPMC until 2018 and went to another bank in NYC and got RIF'd last month so I'm job searching now.

Really liked my time in Technology at JPMC (stayed there for 5 years), only thing I didn't like was that my MD wanted everyone in the JC office Mon-Fri, no exceptions.

Questions:
1 - Is JC still the tech hub in the NY metro? I remember that any tech positions at Park Avenue were moved to NJ/OH/India back then.
2 - What is the office mandate now? Driven to JC was really bad, imagine that's worse now.

Commute is horrible.
Don’t.
On top of that, building and offices are horrible.

Go elsewhere. Better yet, go full remote.

JC is still a major tech hub. They're just not hiring as much here. Hirings in other (cheaper) locations, but its all LOB specific. So definitely take a look.

Commute is sh!t as others have stated, no 2 ways about it. But if your manager allows flexibility, its manageable. We have constant inflow and outflow of people all day. That is to say some come in early, and leave by noon or 2pm while others come in late and leave later. Its the norm.

Company is doing well, so its still worth it to join.

Yep, I'm familiar with the "trading desks" as we called them. I worked in two or three different buildings at Washington Blvd and really missed cubicles (half walled).

Everyone didn't like the new layout to a point where we resorted to using phone booths/conference rooms. And for the first time in my career, I had to use noise cancelling headsets all the time given the noise there.

At that time in the new building (2015?) MDs sent their goons to take pictures of desks, showing who was in office or not.

Also, be prepared for call center type open office setting. Rows and rows of eight seats 4x4 facing each other. Everyone on separate different zoom calls all day at various levels of volumes. This is after the commute what you have to look forward to for hours.
No privacy whatsoever. This is how corporations maximize real estate expenses. What used to space for 4 cubes is now same space for 8 chairs.
If only Dilbert were alive this environment puts cubicle office life to shame.
Ah full height walled cubes, fond memories.

Arrival past 6:45, for every 10 mins, can add 20 mins in commute time. If you recall, the last 2-3 into downtown JC, can take as long as the rest of your commute. The local traffic is just awful, the traffic signals hold traffic back block-by-block. There is constant road construction on the JC hoboken border so all routes north from JC are awful (pick your poison, patterson plank, 1/9 tonnelle ave).
Yes, the back half of the commute can be equally frustrating. Best would be return trip during lunchtime and finish day WFH.
Some managers that are either at a different location or is understanding makes all the difference.
Knowing that most/all desk jobs can be performed from home, forcing oneself into the car or public trans, is like declaring oneself insane. The cost/benefit to an employee is so upside down as to be ludicrous.
Buckle up!

Thanks for the helpful clarification. I used to get in JC at 7am but had to leave around 6pm as leaving earlier was not an option due to my meetings and the traffic leaving JC between 4pm and 6pm was just like a parking lot.

The RTO policy at my last job is similar to what JPMC has today (the threshold is 70%) so I will take a look at openings there.

Driving in/out of JC anytime between the hours of 7:30-11:00 and 16:00 -19:00 is much worse than ever.
I arrive to JC no later than 6:45. At that hour the commute to JC is tolerable.
The RTO policy right now is 3/week, must include either Mon or Fri.
There is an attendance monitoring system. If you fall below 60% in office you will be warned once in email, twice, formally warned, thrice, you're out (depending what else is going on at that point). You could find yourself on the short list of the next RIF.
Yes, your manager can pretty much dictate all your comings and goings.
Some tech in JC, but mainly Plano, Columbus, India. Good luck
