Thread regarding Citigroup Inc. / Citibank / Citi layoffs

Sue for Mental Stress

These are people lives that they are playing games with. Some may be sole providers for their family and with all the layoffs and the economy sinking how are they going to find a job at this time. I have never seen a company so shallow for months promoting upcoming layoffs but yet sending email about mental stress. How hyprocrital!

So many talking down about others feelings related to the situation were in. If you are one of the people belittleing others for their feelings why are you on this site? Many have “said” you are not concerned about lay off, it is what it is, get over it, find a new job and it is not impacting your daily life. Food for Thought - why are you checking the layoff sites late at night if you’re so “unbothered”. 🙄

I agree and support the original poster. Citi is leadership have failed miserably, therefore, they need to be held accountable.

Sheesh. Y’all are ridiculous. It’s business. They aren’t harassing or victimizing or whatever. They have been clear that it’s a major restructuring. I don’t get the hand wringing and the victim hood. It’s a bit stressful until the dust settles, but beyond that, prepare for the worst, hope for the best. I’ve been laid off before, more than once, it’s not death. It’s just a job hunt. I’ve always ended up in a better place afterward. It’ll work out in the end.

Post ID: @2iie+1p7GtGiS don’t speak with anybody at citi. The only thing you should and can do is go to an employment attorney. See if you can get a free consultation. Tell him or her everything and just make sure you have backup. You need to print out all of your back up now in case they let you go when you can’t have access to your computer.

I’ve actually reviewed the code of conduct and pulled out pieces I feel have been violated. I am not an attorney, I am not an expert and I know companies Cover themselves with amendments, rules and other things. I have already brought up the mental health concerns to manager and within town hall questions and survey feedback. In addition to VOE. That said, going to ethics committee or HR seems like it would just cause me issues because they all work for the bank - and report to the people that are causing these issues for employees. And an ethical complaint that high, is ruled on by the board. Well who do you think they are going to look out for? Which has led me to believe the only thing we could potentially do is seek an attorney for guidance. In addition to the stress and anxiety of potentially losing our own jobs, there is the added factor of what this end result will be, and if the things were working on will still be relevant when all is said and done. Will our partners working on these things still be here? Will we start from scratch? Will the direction change and the initiative be scrapped anyway? So much to consider day to day.

The code of conduct specifically calls out that Citi believes employees are entitled to a safe and healthy working environment. And, employees should never use behavior that is harassing, threatening, bullying, retaliatory, or abusive.

From my perspective, threatening and bullying are both being leveraged here. In addition, we’ve been told numerous times to deliver and not be distracted. And yet, they poke the bear daily with emails and useless meetings and a home page to showcase the looming doom. And none of this screams healthy working environment to me from mental or emotional perspective.

It all just feels disgusting and unethical. Now whether or not it could be ruled as such, I’m not sure. But I would absolutely consider being involved in escalating the matter as it has impacted my daily life and mental wellbeing quite a bit since the announcements began.

Post ID: @1whk+1p7GtGiS. And what happened to citis motto to treat everybody with dignity and respect? Jane and her cronies are awful human beings.

Some of the replies seem unprofessional. Mental stress affects everyone, not just young people. When the CEO announced the mass layoffs, she should have had a concrete plan. However, it doesn't seem that way. Now, she is promoting 'fear'.

This is what happened at Wells Fargo. Buckle up, you're in for a long ride! Hopefully there will be a time when the cuts stop, at Wells the cuts have been ongoing for at least 3 years now with no end in sight.

The decisions of the leadership are Random. They play with lives and emotions of employees just like contractors. These mo--ns don’t understand what employees mean for organization. No wonder an office shoot out or law suit might happen. I am scared to go office

I want in on the lawsuit. For the last few years, this company has been been playing these types of games. And to the people who stereotype the OP as young or crazy, who cares. If the younger generation is willing to take on long hours and company overreach, then good for them. The veterans, who think this is just how it is, should join in and change that attitude. The long-time employees built this company and should be pi---d at what is going on and how you are being treated. If no information is being given, and they are holding this looming layoff over your heads, then take a break, do the minimum until they give you decisions. Remember, your CEO is probably making 500 times what you are making. The decision on your job has most likely already been made. If you keep on backing this employer, you are just setting yourself up for a much bigger disappointment when they lay you off a week before Christmas.

A third of the posters think its all a mental game Citi is playing, another third thinks its incompetence, and another third thinks its a mix.

Overall not good either way.

Think. The company breeds poor culture and you are part of it. There is no way to grow organically. Survival is not thriving. Even if you survive now in next round you will fall CITI is not worth your time and energy. Start your efforts on building your own CITI or skills to grow in another company.
If you are old put your time in preparing your retirement with proper planning and investments. If you are incompetent put your time to take courses or talk with experts to understand market. Don’t stagnate.finally it’s your life, your time
All the best. Keep yourself positive. Spread positivity and love.
Remember: if money is lost nothing is lost. If health is lost something is lost.
Let’s get ready. It’s not worth to stay here anymore.

Avoid mental stress. Make your choice. Even if you survive the layoff it’s not worth it. There won’t be any hikes or promotions. They will let go contractors and squeeze you out.
You might get better pay and stress free life elsewhere. Utilize this time to brush up your skills. Increase your knowledge. Utilize the available resources. Don’t spend your time freely for projects or others.

Agree with the poor handling so far. Instead of death by a thousand cuts, it feels like death by a thousand townhall meetings. The real strategy is having no strategy.

I’m sticking with, you must be young. Older/more experienced folks have been thru this before. You learn to roll with it and be comfortable with ambiguity.

No reason to stress about something you 1) can’t control and 2) may never even happen.

I understand your frustration, OP. The mental games are very unprofessional on the company’s part. Breeding poor culture and a lot of mental anguish for many employees.Understanding the business has to make decisions to proceed with their goals, this could be handled in a more empathetic fashion. It might be a good idea to look into the EAP program to seek some therapy sessions if you’re feeling that the situation is impacting your mental health.

To those that commented: Assuming someone “lives on another planet” or is “very young”, is judgmental and inconsiderate. You have no idea what their current mental state might be and/ or what they’ve been through in life or what they might be facing personally due to the potential layoff within this chaos. Maybe try some compassion or empathy for others instead of making assumptions and negative comments.

Don't worry about what you cannot control and the more you learn that things get easier to process. If you want, you can apply other roles outside of Citi and see what happens or wait it out and maybe your role is not impacted. This can happen at any company. You can't put all your trust in one role because companies can lay off people at any time.
