I was offered a “Customer Experience Captain” position. While a salary sales manager was offered the MBA... my store manager says I am in charge of AST duties as well as AYS. And my hours will be coming out of AYS... makes no sense.. I was the ASTS, I learned everything on my own and now I have to teach a flighty sales manager how to do my job... I’m sick to my stomach!

Read again what the person said about MTM and MBA. They didn't say ASTS was equal to MTM. This new MBA position is equal footing with the old MTM position, based on level of responsibility. I like the analogy of apples and oranges they used.
Two very different jobs but both very important. And just because a position used to be an hourly exec didn't mean it wasn't important. Your VM's were hourly execs but they participated in deep dives & floor walks and were pretty much considered senior managers, too.
Back in the day in my store, you were able to pursue a path to HR manager when we had their presence. But we all know what happened there. Another rung of the ladder kicked out.
I’m going to keep reading what you are saying to better understand. I loved being and ASTS and wanted to make more money. That was the “path” I was told I needed to take. My role was certainly important but I guess I never considered myself on the “level” of an MTM. Especially since my title was supervisor and I wasn’t salaried. So I guess I’m not understanding you—not trying to be argumentative at all.
"ASTS>Sales Supervisor>Sales Manager >MTM. How is that equivalent?"
You are making wrong assumptions about a career path. Most ASTS were not looking to be sales managers or store managers. It was a niche position focusing on supporting the stores structure and the management staff on that store manager path. I've known very, very few ASTS who went into Sales management, ever. This new MBA position IS on equal footing with the other management positions (OVM, CSM), all exempt and reporting to the SM. It's still apples and oranges though because the MBA has all the old AST functions in it which have to be kept going.
I was an ASTS and uh, yeah. MTM are definitely two steps above the ASTS position. Of course what we do is important but in a career path, we were not the same level. It’s reality, not an insult. ASTS>Sales Supervisor>Sales Manager >MTM. How is that equivalent?
Why is everyone downvoting OP? They're describing a typical Macys favoritism move by shortchanging one person in favor of another but the first one has to do the other's work because the favorite is too incompetent. Tale as old as time at macys. Plus the inconsistency of decisions across the board should be very disturbing to people.
How would MTM be "two steps above " MBA? It's apples and oranges. Two very different functions necessary to work together to run a store. This comment tells me a lot; you definitely don't understand the role the ASTS and AST played in the store, or the responsibility they had for a lot of things.
You should have been offered a severance. If you weren’t you need to call HR services ASAP. Sounds like your store manager is trying to use you to get the AST job done while promoting someone else because they don’t want to be left with no one to do the AST job. Get clarification now before it’s too late :) Advocate for yourself and know that none of us are being told the whole truth at this point.
MTM is like 2 steps above MBA.
@1xft+15G6HpSM,
What job did you do, and what were you offered? You may be severance eligible.
Our store manager put an MTM into the role. She failed as a sales manager, was promoted... was not an effective MTM but now has the MBA role. Should be interesting...
If you were ASTS and were offered the customer experience captain, you are eligible for severance. That’s not a comparable position.
Macy’s is purging disgusting way. Store managers favorites are staying on jobs. They need to offer severance to us. Why to change job titles . I should be eligible for severance.
so true about herald square!! some of the associates think they can do what they want and the union will protect them. people would not believe he stories of what goes on in the city stores. there needs to be some HR representation. getting rid of the HR department in HSQ was a big mistake,
Herald Square needs HR representation because it's a union cesspool.
Our store manager was NOT told MBA was a position to ready someone to be a store manager. Why would it be anyway? No merchandising or visual experience is needed or learned by whoever is the MBA. It's loads of AST and then the management of AYS, and then staffing plus some HR workings, and some operations. Managers of OVM and also of Sales & Customer Service are really in line to be the next store managers. I think that was an excuse not to retain your ASTS as MBA, for whatever reason.
EVERYONE MUST RESIGN AS THE TOP MANAGERS TAKING TENS OF MILLIONS EVERY YEAR AND ALL THEY HAVE DONE JUST PLUNGING THE COMPANY TO THE GROUND.
Not sure how many years you have, but you should consider the severance if you have a decent amount of years. You’re going to end up doing all the mba work anyway. Hope your salary wasn’t reduced. I’ve read the job description and there is nothing in it that hints at preparing future store managers. It’s all the current duties of AST Supervisor with the addition of owning AYS. That’s it. Hell, it only requires a high school diploma.
Sorry and I know the feeling. This is in no way to discourage but for encouragement. If you wait you won't have the opportunity to choose severance and then you'll loose it all. It is absolutely not right what'sdone to you. Please act fast and get out of there. You might end up doing your same job with a lower title.
Talk about using people to benefit themselves. It should be PEOPLE FIRST!!!
regardless of having a job or not, it is a slap in the face. i am an executive and would be interested in the job though, but herald square did not eliminate the ASTS jobs. there are about 6 of them and an AST manger. why? i understand the size of the store but don't they want the store to be aligned with branch stores? what hearld square needs if anything is HR representation. there is too many issues.
You could have no jbo at all.
I am a PT AST and I have to train my brand new MBA boss 😂😂
You don't have to stay. You are severance eligible. They are cutting your pay, too.
Store managers were told the MBA position should go to senior managers who could be store managers. They elevated the role. During the shutdown your store manager ranked all of you and that ranking is where all of this is coming from. I’m sorry this happened to you. Training your replacement is the ultimate slap in the face in any job. There are no more supervisory level hourly jobs left. All are salary.
I would sick to my stomach also. That is disgusting. I hope you can find something and get out!!!
