Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Too much Change

I've worked here for 10 years now and the past few years there has been way too much churn and change at Chevron. We have gone through layoffs, changes with computer systems, new companies and now the sell of Chevron Park and a possible move to Texas. I know we live in a changing world but employees don't want this kind of instability and guessing what come s next. We would have thought the chaos of thr Transformation would have been enough churn for management but seems like this craziness is the new normal at Chevron! Give the employees time to catch their breath for a year or two at least!

I've been with Chevron for 8 years and have had 7 different supervisors do my annual review. It is constant churn here, almost a professional re-organization organization. I generally like the company, but as an experienced hire, be prepared to have your career stop progressing if you choose to join.

The Transformation multiplied the Matrix effect of our previously overly complex organization. We are completely bogged down at this point with cross-communication between BUs, the tech center, advisors, directors, renew/recycle goons and managers of all stripes. We are mired and decision making is worse than ever. Luckily, there is very little of actual impact to decide about.

The real problem is it is unclear whether the transformation is any improvement. From where I sit, there are more management meetings and less time to get the job done than before. Don't look to me like the Microsoft way is more efficient that the legacy Chevron way.

MW had the b*lls to take on the bloated cost structure and out of control capital spending he inherited. Everyone knew we had too many people doing business with ourselves, and we had too many marginal projects. The legacy of JW and GK was reckless spending. Look at XOM - it doesn’t last.

MW is shrinking the company to match the future Chevron. It is far more important that we preserve the dividend and executive bonuses. Diversity candidates and high pots will continue to get the raises and promotions, the rest of you get back to work and stop complaining.

These changes affect a small number of people. The rest of us frankly don’t know or care that much about it.

I for one am glad that my management told us that this is not about a large scale reorg like we had two years ago, but adjusting at senior levels when retirements create a chance to simplify the top deck.

Employees are getting restless with the constant changes. It was miserable going through the transformation. I had hoped after that mess things would settle down but thats just not happening. Management has got to think about what its putting its staff though at some point. People might not like the younger worker but even though I'm oolder I understand we are going to have a really tough time if they all get tired of guessing what's next and walk out. Yes its a cyclical business but this is too much. Ive been through it many times before but I'm tired of it. Its already hard to recruit in this business so don't make it harder. Management please wake up and stop this nightmare!

I’ve gotten to where I treat MW’s org announcements just like CDIO emails: delete. Once my boss or department manager starts frantically saying I need to pick 4 positions, including my own, I spend a few mins updating WD talent profile / card and then go back to work. Anyone who has been in the company 8+ years is probably numb to the whole process. It’s almost like keeping a job after each re-org is a punishment.

cutting the "fat" in the company to give back more to shareholders and push up share price so that when media look back at his career, it will be a positive halo effect

MW made a list five years ago of his intents and is taking his time working through it. Cutting cost and staff was number one. Then reshaping, reducing BUs, then required support teams. Now exec level reshaped to reflect new lower level setup (size, scale) and flatten. Next reduce locations to simplify. It is all logical and related. Once all the internal machinations are complete, next will be deals to buy or sell parts or all.

MW is only looking at dollars and not paying attention to the massive loss in talent and the stress and disengagement all of this is causing. People are tired and fed up with all of this. Stop the change before its too late and everyone leaves!
