Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Any word on the push to internally hire and the future of contractors?

Hello, just spoke to a couple fellow contractors who are having very different experiences.
One tried to move teams and was told that there is no roles available for contractors and that there is a push to hire direct employees.
The other one was just converted to a direct employee in a rush. Made it sound like they're trying to save him from a layoff.

This job market is tragic. Hoping to ride out this wave by keeping my head down and chugging along. There's 3 people on our team - was saved from layoff last summer by taking on an entirely different role. It's been a lot of sink or swim, but I'm doing pretty well. Is this a bigger target on my back?
My spouse has been out of work for a year and is falling into depression. It's rough for a lot of folks. I know stuff here isn't great, or even good, a lot of the time. But, all these posts about how miserable people are - idk. It could be a lot worse for many of us.

Goto GM. Ran into a friend who was Ford (fuel PD), quit, is now GM. At just under 30 years old, his bonus was 30k this year and loves the company. good luck!

Got laid off at Ford and got a 30% increase in pay

I got lucky
because I "casted" 2 nets one for the mobile space and anywhere that uses python.

Had a separate resume for each area mentioned above.

Got offers in both areas
I took the Python Job.

So much happier only downside is it's not fully remote.

So there is some light out there

Opposite is true in IT. Left Ford in 2022. Got more money and bigger bonuses.

I am a Ford retiree from November 2022 and can tell you that once you leave Ford, be prepared for at least a 25 to 30% pay cut. Having been in powertrain calibration, I can tell you that asking $50-60 per hour was very easy to get thru a contract company and the benefits being offered were comparable to being a salaried Ford engineer during 2023. However, now most contract companies are only willing to pay $35 to $40 per hour.
Ride the Ford Pony as long as you can because the reality of age discrimination and lower earnings are the reality once you leave...

@2kpj+1sE15EQ0 While I agree that the job market is not so bad, still is bad for me, because I don't want a pay cut. Therefore, instead of having dozens of options, I have only found a few in the last several months.

I am not sure about having less responsibility in the new jobs, unless I apply to more junior roles, which I am overqualified for them. Moreover, having less responsibility in the new company may make it easier for them to let me go in a recession (and one is brewing).

Either way, it seems I am stuck at Ford until the job market improves. I believe that I will survive the next round of layoffs, since Model E is the one facing the brunt of it, and my department lost a lot of personnel in the past ones. I believe Ford as a company will last for a couple more of years, particularly if they get rid of Ford Next and most of Model E.

The main reason I am still looking for a similar role in another company is that I also believe that, sooner or later, Ford will let me go and the company will go down.

People get a bunch or work and start to feel swamped. But at the end of the day they are either going to let you go or not. If they keep shoveling work at you, it makes less sense for them to let you go if there is no one else to do it. The again...that hasn't stopped them before. Relax. In the end they sc--w themselves....

job market really isn't that bad if you are willing to take a slightly lower paying position with possibly lower responsibility (bonus). Not sure what all the panic is about.

Well, this isn't the place to get a post from an employee doing a 'happy dance;.

The employment, conversion and management of contract employees has always been inconsistent across the organization. It totally depends on where you are, what you do, who you work for and what kind of number of heads the department has to work with.

@1yzh, amen, brother. I feel bad for people who have dedicated years to the company and were solid employees and get laid off because they stayed in the wrong spot and got laid off as part of a bigger change. But when some gets laid off and can’t get another job for 1 year, they were likely not that good of an employee in the first place and that’s why no one else wants them either. @OP, tell your spouse to spend some energy on getting some skills people want instead of burdening you with their misery of laziness. There are always jobs for good people, but it’s up to you to be a person companies want.

Why doesn't your spouse start a side business while he/she looks for another job? (e.g. detailing cars). Look up the "Rules of the seven hustles." Even investing is a side hustle. I started a few siide businesses years ago because I saw so many people devastated after being let go.

There is no push to hire direct. If there were they would be calling back people they laid off.

The only direct hiring they're doing is in LCCs.

First time?

First they freeze internal moves.

Then something gets leaked to the news about pending layoffs.

Our leaders keep saying operate as normal in the meantime.

So far we’ve hit 2 of 3 lately and reorg meetings in progress across multiple orgs.

Ffs it’s the same playbook at the same time every year. Beware the Ides of June/July.

At Ford there is no "right move" to save you from layoffs. A couple of contractors in my area were converted to FTE in a rush a couple of years ago, but still got canned. Not sure about hiring only FTEs, since there is no more hiring in my area, said so the LL4, even when we are drowning in work.

Good luck!
