Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Exxon doesn't care about employee development

Not only is there no real employee development at Exxon, but they don’t seem to recognize development you obtain outside of the company once you are hired. I got my masters on my own (before I knew about company reimbursement). I made the mistake of believing my manager when he said it would lead to more opportunities & money.

Pushing this to the top so that others know what to expect. OP is @1zqz+1lBduAZp.

@OP’s (both of you) - you’re a bit late to the game on this one! Like at least 20 years too late.

My last training was mid 2019. Great employee development.

OP, this company has always had its “high potential” system, but now more than ever, if you are not one of the “chosen” ones, then you’re an irrelevant, totally expandable button pusher. I can’t count how many younger people, not sponsored, have been shocked to see that getting a relevant degree while working for EM didn’t make a shred of difference. If you’re not chosen you can move mountains and nobody would care about your accomplishments. It’s a little late for these kind of illusions. Wake up.

OP, No amount of higher degrees is going to help you in your EM career.

You struggle to help develop people when you have never done what the people you are developing do.

The OP is a good 2 to 2 1/2 years late to the game, with this major revelation. Personally, I came to the same realisation at least 20 years ago.

@1zxe Depends on the masters degree and the field you work in.

I have a hard time picturing someone with no post-baccalaureate qualifications performing CFD for multi-phase flows or optimizing nozzle geometries. I talk with people almost daily who have “experience” and who also never seem to know how or where to start a problem.

For sitting at a desk and looking over P&IDs a bachelors will do just fine.

A piece of paper means nothing. The only thing that matters is your performance. If you want to obtain an MBA or masters degree that is fine but don't expect to be paid more unless you are able to contribute more because you learned something.

Even your "at work performance" doesn't matter if you are not one of the cherry-picked

I have been told...

Nothing you do outside of work adds up to anything.

All that matters is your at work performance.

Are you a better performer with your masters?
