So Long Colors Program - How Could We Have Spent So Much Money On This Stuff?

I am so proud of my wells supervisor. Wednesday of last week, my supervisor took a vote and then passed a small trash can around. We were all asked to toss our colors bands in it as it was one of the biggest waste of time and money. Everyone looked around and I was shocked that not a single person had something good to say about the colors program. My supervisor said I don’t want to hear another person say they are a red etc. When we were told how many millions of dollars had been spent on this program, it sounded like a lie. How could any manager at Chevron waste so much money on this program unless they were getting a kickback. I am new to Chevron (5 years) and if we find more waste like this, I will be shocked.

I loved e-colors and my team did it every year. It was great to see how the team looked on paper, who was similar and different. The reds were bossy and impatient, yellows/blues chatty and greens detail nerds. Want something done now? Ask a red. Setting up a Christmas party - bring in the yellow and blues. Technical problem - deploy the greens.

@1pny if you never heard of e-colors, that means you've never been involved with drilling a well in your 20 years. Time to get out from under your CTC rock and see how the oil industry really works.

DP got some good hunting trips out of it. He used to go to Alaska with one of the coaches for private e color training. Remote helicopter in type of training. Ones with moose and elk etc.

Those guys made out like bandits, same with the human performance junk. Someone was getting major kickbacks, all useless junk that didn’t help getting oil out of the ground.

Ecolors was interesting. If you were red, you were an a$$ho-e. Yellow, a pushover. Blue, a slave to management. Green, a nerd. It worked very well in determining stereotypes.

I worked in a number of BU's that utilized e-Colors and, I will offer that it served a purpose in the early. Like a lot of "tools" it was ultimately misappropriated and misused. Much like the old adage, ".. if the only tool you have is a hammer, then everything looks like a nail."

I never saw the data justifying e-Colors or, for that matter, saw any sort of decision path that landed on e-Colors. Rather, as several noted, its adoption was driven in a very large extent by one individual.

In many BU, drilling was using e-Colors while the rest of the organization was using something else or, in a lot of cases, nothing at all.

I have been a Petrotech in CTC (ETC) for 20 years and have never heard of the "Colors Program": Is this a facilities thing?

I just ran a few financial numbers and I was shocked to see that my small group spent nearly 6 million dollars on e-colors from 2014 to 2019. 1 million dollars each year. I could not go back any further than 2014 for some reason. I am hoping we were picking up the cost from some other functions as this is just insane considering how many people we let go in 2020.

Three of the must bizarro company run culture initiatives that as a newbie from noble was confounded by: e-colors, tenants, and the chevron way. You can tell they served their purpose at some point, deeply ingrained in the speech and culture - once proud…but somehow strangely morphed into something farcical and confusingly meaningless. Dated I suppose. Turning off the tide. How will Chevron redefine itself? Human Energy. ESG golden child. Nobody Gives a Freak. Just like the supv and the team demonstrated, it’s all trash and a complete waste of our $$ and not fooling anyone.

Chevron needs to stop all the nonsense sold to them by worthless consultants. What a joke it is with all the useless consultant BS. How about just being an Oil Company without all the worthless BS including the Woke culture being promoted by MW........just saying from a 40 year employee who enjoyed the package received in 2020;

e-colors was in use at Chevron for at least 15 years that I remember. There are two problems with it: (1) A very high percentage of petrotechs and drillers were red-green. A very high percentage of HR were blue-yellow. Guaranteed conflict? You bet... (2) e-colors is not trendy enough anymore, instead we have minority quota systems, D&I, MARC, Ally, etc. which all depend on identity politics rather than personality types.

I heard from a reliable source in HR that the e-colors program was a (not so) subtle way to identify future leaders and set career paths. If you wanted to become a manager you had to be "red".

The ecolors owner and DP were very good friends. Each one of those bracelets was $3-5. Hard hat stickers were $3. The rollout of the program was $5 million iirc. I couldn’t believe the brainwashing around such a judgmental test and cheesy trinket.

We used to have ecolor consultants working on our deepwater drillships. Not sure what they did but for sure they cost us a lot. Many teams are still running ecolors training programs. Be prepared for more ecolor cr-p as we RTW

The hourly rates CVX had to pay some of those ecolors consultants was double and triple the day rates for the deepwater drilling consultants.

You have to remember that ecolors was thrust upon the BU’s from corporate. Management at the BU level was essentially forced to use ecolors. It wasn’t debatable.

If someone didn’t get a villa in Thailand or some other part of Southeast Asia I’d be surprised.
