Cloud and Cognitive cuts are not a surprise. Let's be honest, IBM Cloud is an also ran - if IBM has a cloud future, it's as a broker between the big cloud providers. And Watson is a dud. Books could be written about both of those failures.
I also heard that Blockchain got whacked. Another visionary "moonshot" that never got off the launch pad.
Why isn't this hitting the national news?
There are whole offshore teams that could and should go too. Tens of thousands of people who do absolutely nothing but someone wanted to build an empire.
I know of Watson Health RAs in Ann Arbor as well.
Let's be real. IBM has a LOT of fat to trim. Like the m0ron in the other post who gets paid and doesn't do anything. Also too many middle managers. HONESTLY, you could probably cut 20% of IBM and wouldn't notice. So many people doing manual processes and spreadsheets and sitting around chatting all day. I see it EVERYWHERE. If you disagree, you're probably one of them sitting around barely working.
This is a reason why IBM has no plan whatsoever to grow revenue... it is all about cutting costs to make earnings the next quarter... Unfortunately as we all know it is a vicious circle that will end up badly! But the execs don't care...

Cutting overhead? Painful, but I get it. Cutting resources on the bench? Also painful but I get it. ...... cutting staff that are currently engaged on long term projects?!?!

Part of the plan As Redhat ramps up, legacy IBM ramps down. It’s the same with sales/marketing There is piles of overlap in tier 2 coverage. (42 organizations down to 2 results in overlap) A lot of that was removed over the last 2 weeks. Band 10’s and above supposedly got a little better deal of 3 extra months of severance. Let’s go to the scoreboard
GTS = spinoff 90k
GBS = partner enabled restructuring
Cognitive = restructuring via eliminating overlap
Systems = ??? Rumor is big announcement end of Jan
Layoffs are across the board, many BU's affected, but C&CS taking some big hits.
we used to have 42 in sales and tech sales now down to 12 approx. but they still expect more $$ coming through the door - totally deluded

I just got RA'ed even though our group is already running at about half the workforce. I don't know how the Org will continue to get stuff done with such a skeleton crew...
