Years of Experience at Nike

Odds are that you’ve been asked the omnipresent question “how many years have you been at Nike”. It used to be a badge of honor and old timers “knew more” than newer employees (and it might still be a badge of honor in some departments - like retail for example) - I even heard it be raised as an example of “unconscious bias” in a manager essentials class. But now just 3 years later - the longer you’ve been at Nike the worse it reflects on your ability to execute the “consumer direct offense” and what was once a badge of honor has now made you a target for downsizing.

Not going to lie, when people use to quote how long they've been at Nike... I usually disregard them. I feel like they've probably been the most entitled group of people I've ran into around here. That was very prominent in tech. "I've been at Nike for 23 years! I know stuff!". However everytime I went to them they would get upset and tell me to talk to someone else... and I've been here for 10 years now.. lol

Regardless - tenure means nothing, just means someone didn't job hop and probably is under paid in todays terms. Also probably very jaded. That being said, I've been here for 10 years but I got comfy... so...

Look no further than Nike SB. Less than one handful left of people that actually skate. Zero people onboard that kicked that category into gear over the last two decades. One person left who worked with any of the originals over the past five years. No surprise that NIKE still thinks it’s gods gift to skateboarding. Delusional.

Yes they did force out all the people with tenure with deep relationships that loved the brand and knew how to get S$@t done and showed up every day. This all goes back to JJ who’s WOMENS AP minions are now running the place. (And Nike is still getting its a$$ kicked by LULU, Athleta and PL.) Only concerned about titles, top down mgmt (matrix was blown apart) and the huge salaries they are pulling in to even notice what’s happening below deck. What they miscalculated was most (not all) of that “old guard” were actually experts in their areas, building new strategies and leading the way for new talent of the future. Now no one know what the H$@l is going on. From design, production creation, sales, brand marketing you name it their brand passion and knowledge were marched out the door so all the people no one could stand to work with could run the place without any challenge. When you have a brand that churns and burns the icons like a tee table you have a product crisis. When you have a workplace that is so incredibly special that NO ONE wants to show up for…you have a culture/Brand crisis. If you ever aspired to work the for brands like Gap, JCrew or Abercrombie, Nike is the place for you. It is irreparably broken.

Definitely get out now, while you can still articulate what exactly you did at Nike and have a good reason for leaving. Don't be one of those people who go through the motions for years, then have to find a new job. Employers will not be impressed by the Nike jargon to make sending an email seem like a week-long task. They will wonder why they he** you stayed at a do-nothing job for so long and walked into the interview like it's their honor to talk to you.

It sounds like a koolaid-drinker feels the need to defend the honor of the swoosh he wears so proudly and prominently across his entire body. A white knight (not Knight) riding to the rescue of his damsel in distress. Fighting for truth and honor against the mo--nic masses who would see the light if only they could lift their eyes and see the truth. The truth that he sees and knows to be true...
The problem, though, is that the truth is that Nike is a sinking ship. While it was an innovative company fully of bright minds and driving entrepreneurship in the past; Those days are long gone and the legacy of the brand is all that's keeping it afloat. For now.

I have also felt/noticed this shift, I’ve worked here for 5 years and am starting to look for something new because I’m concerned that staying here longer will limit my perspective and make it more difficult to move on in the future. Also it took a long time to learn the Nike business + be able to contribute positively (even though I had lots of previous experience) and I’m just genuinely confused around what kind of ideas are valued here anymore/how decisions get made

I have wondered if they are purposefully trying to force out the more tenured employees. The turnover has been insane. So many new hires and so much lost business knowledge.
