New STI Rating - Pi-s off the masses

Vz has come up with a new rating system so they can justify not paying out 100% STI. Here they go again. Needs folks to yell not ok just like other things they have done. Majority of people would fall under approaching.

One leading for a director with 25 employees? Sounds like you got a sh1tty director. I have a team of 6 and 2 of them got leading. Year before that, i gave 3 leading ratings.

Leaders need to try harder.

The only truth to any type of a new STI plan or enhancement of the STI is that it will never benefit the employee. HR does not sit around and think about how do we show appreciation for dedication and hard work, but how do we reduce the overall STI. And how can we provide those with a short tenure and lower salary with a higher percentage vs a lower percentage for those with a longer tenure and knowledge base. All about being equal and a regression towards the mean with a minimum number outside the bell curve. Has absolutely nothing to do with performance or achievements. If your main talent is side speak with the ability to look others in the eye and lie, then you are director and above material, where you will be handsomely rewarded with a large STI.

Of course there is a quota. All forms of compensation have a budget, including STI. Pay for performance is BS.

The new ratings held promise for those who were excellent but not quite leading to be recognized as different from the herd. But instead of allowing people to be rated on their work, Each director had a quota for the top 2 ratings. On a team of 25, our director was told only 1 of each. In a high performing team, people got sc--wed. Glad I no longer have time tell great employees they are doing everything great but are "achieving" while the run of the mill lazy employees get the same. Out if here tomorrow!

Now the slackers are the favorites and actually get bigger raises than their hard working counterparts. How is that better?

When I worked there people that are slackers received the same raise as people who didn’t do anything. No incentive whatsoever

I’m in B2B sales, I received my first “leading” along with Diamond club and had my worst pay raise. I gathered everyone received the same increase across the board after talking to a few others.

I'm gone now from the rathole the company became but it was obvious managers had little role in writing reviews and any in depth tracking of individual achievements. It was entirely left up to the employee to be crafty and clever writing their own reviews and then the manager would rubber stamp it. That didn't even matter. It was all subjective when deciding who ended up in leading. Making 5 categories won't make a bit of difference in that subjective decision in the end. I know people who just repeated the same words year after year in their reviews, and who would know because you had a different manager half the time for the following year. Chatgpt would have been pretty useful.

The fact that Verizon could double every single employee salary and still turn a profit is what gets me.

HR is full of double speak. They told us leaders for years to rate people according to their objective results. Now, they are telling us to rank on a bell curve according to this new 5 rating scale. No wonder the HRBP turnover is so high - the ones with any integrity leave or get RIFed.

This doesn't fix the problem by adding 2 more levels. The issue isn't whether is someone performing or not. The issue is with the brown nosing and seeing those that don't do anything continue to get bonuses. It's all about who you know not what you know and accomplish

@2kur

My suspicion is that the 10% is going to be indexed to a “4” and not a “3”.

This was announced at the beginning of the year. Not sure why this is a surprise to anyone.

This is a great change. For the people who were above performing, but not necessarily a leading, it will give them an extra bump in STI and pay. Alternatively, if you are a lower performer, but not necessarily a developing, you deserve a little less. Right now, all of these people are performing and get the same. It’s not fair. I’m happy with the change.

They just made it more visible and more pay impacting. They always had P-, P, P+ they just didn’t share it. Pay for performance is actually going to be reality.

lol @ the comments that suggest doing your job well and no one will complain! Even if you’re doing well they will still say it’s not enough while increasing your workload when they’re working with a skeleton crew! It’s never enough for the vampires lol.
