Thread regarding Whole Foods Market Inc. layoffs

Career progress

Ever since I got the job here I wanted to become a supervisor. I don't know how possible that is, but it's what I wish for. Some will say it doesn’t make sense because they don’t like it in this company, but nowhere is it good when you’re at the very bottom of the pyramid. How to ascend from a minion level employee to a supervisor? Is that even possible?

I have been with the company nearly 15 years. I have rarely seen the best person for the job get the position. Like maybe twice. One of those times I was on the panel and the ASTL was literally crying and left the room in a rage because the panel was voting against his friend. ASTL should not have even been on the panel because of nepotism. Then he went to the STL to try and overturn the panels decision. STL told him to accept the panels decision.

That's the way WF works. There is no company that has so many family, spouses, long term friends working together, it's messy and extremely hard for new TM's to move up in some metros.

It's 100% politics. You can work as hard as you want, do the best job, be the most knowledgeable and productive, but they will still hire someone straight off the street over you if you aren't liked. Often times people vote for who will make their lives easier. Who will let us slack off more. I've even seen people vote against someone because they wanted to date them and couldn't if they were their boss.

There is a playbook: if you have an identity du jour just find someone who has the position you want even if you have zero qualifications and flirt w them. The minute they hit on you, you are that much closer to supplanting them.

If you have a non-valued identity you will be forced to earn it like the rest of your kind. Complain or even point that out and yer gone. See also the previous and never take the bait in the meanwhile.

Also, keep your finger on the pulse re: all those bad mouthing you behind your back in the office or DC or store whether it's work related (which it never is) or otherwise.

At will employment used to mean your boss could fire you without a reason which is still true but these days w roving social-based descrimination gangs using closed, back door communication loops you actually have to answer to both your boss and everyone one they know whether they are on your team, regardless who they report to or what they do. Weak leaders always cave to the loudest mouths regardless of facts.

If you are not already building your own cases here, start. You probably already have 1 or 2 false allegations in your file you don't know about. Again, these are actually non-issues like "they use scented laundry detergent" or "saw them comb their hair at their desk". That's the key: the first ones are inoccous to keep you in dark among the creepers in lambs wool. It's is really just harassment in desguise but at WFM it counts against you and it is the buy in of those holding wooden stakes that have surrounded you. When you notice acts committed in unison that is a tell. Intimidation is rampant. At this point if you do happen to make a legitimate and honest work mistake, bo-m strike three and you have no knowledge evidence or leverage. There is at least 1 ringer on every team. It's what they do on weak leadershts behalf.

just keep working and dont call out. thats literally all it takes

i would wait until the middle of next year to get an idea of whats going to change in the company. something is coming down the pipeline for sure, and it might change up all your plans of moving up
