Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

How safe is it to accept a job at Oracle at the moment?

About to get an official offer from Oracle and am curious how safe it is for a new employee joining? I've always been told "first in, first out." But from everything I've heard, most layoffs are coming at the senior management level? I'd be coming in as a mid-level Solutions Engineer.

All those layoffs of experienced 15-20 years engineers and sales staff, will open up many opportunities for younger inexperienced kids out of school. After all, they are entitled to it. They are younger and wiser.

The perks are great, but keep your eyes open. After 15 years, was just laid off, as well as many many other people at the same time.

130k base low CoL remote IC3 and great insur, up from IBM 109k same loc with much worse health insurance. Do what's best for your family the h*ll with everyone else's bad experiences.

You really don't want to work there, but if you need the money then take it and start looking for a better job or plan B.

OP here... I'll probably accept the offer. I'm making 62.7k currently, I've been offered at least 90k in this role... so to the comment about McDonald's... that's what this raise feels like.

Congrats! We’ll look forward to getting caught up with you again on this board once you get RIF’ed.

Oracle is what you make of it, this board attracts the malcontents but most people I know at Oracle are very happy there.

What does that put you at? About $10/hr?

First replier back,

While I recommend "no", my pay increased over 4 years measurably. Base pay, not just stock options. As an IC4/5 I saw a total increase of 28%. Only saw cash bonus two of 4 years, though, so don't count on that no matter what they say.

If you are a leader or unique skill (think architect or similar) you will be fine. If you are one of many (devs, PMs, SAs) and you are there just to scale capabilities, you are high risk.

10 upvotes in 15h? The numbers don't add up, friend. I call cheat. Popping them incognito tabs is pathetic.

“Just took a huge promotion from a stale IBM job. I say yes, take it.”

IBM?!?! OMG, well yes, that would be an upgrade for you. Congrats. However, this proves that Oracle is now forced to fill vacancies by sc-aping the bottom of the barrel.

To the OP, if you currently work at Micky-D’s or IBM and are given an Oracle job offer then I suppose that could be good news. It is all relative of course. Good luck!

Just took a huge promotion from a stale IBM job. I say yes, take it. There are thousands of happy workers not on this forum whose voices aren't heard here. YMMV. Build your own path. Clearly Oracle's offer is good, or you would not even be here asking for advice. Do eet. =]

@2qhr, you don’t have to underline, or feel self conscious. We understand that you pride is hurt, but I would have thought by now you would be so tired of losing!

Run, don’t walk. There are far better companies than Oracle out there.

Today I heard of a kid hired out of university, with no other worlk experience, who stayed at Oracle for 18 months just moved to the compeition for a 150k base.

Safe to take a job? You bet. Best place to be trained.

If you have other offers from a different company, go ahead and accept them and not pick O. You will get stuck with your salary and position until you are old.

If you don't have a job, you can accept the offer but please always continue to look somewhere else where the grass is greener.

“ I've heard, most layoffs are coming at the senior management level?”

How far back did you scroll? Plenty of regular folks were laid off at the beginning of July.

Is there anyone left in your new group to train/onboard you?
What is the expectation that you will get any training or orientation before you are thrown to the wolves?
What are the goals for three months, six months, a year out?

A new support type job is much more than comp and decent colleagues. You need to ensure that success is attainable.

If you are currently job less go ahead and accept Oracle offer. If you are at a stable job, never take a job at Oracle as they are cutting jobs every fortnight. The company is almost dead where every other customer they had in the past are avoiding it .

No, it is not even remotely safe. Don’t do it unless you have absolutely no other choice, in which case then welcome aboard.

Yeah, many of those Glassdoor reviews are less than flattering. I checked them when the company I was working for was being acquired. I thought the same: bunch of malcontents. They turned out to be more correct than not.

Ask for a good salary, one you can live with for years of inflation (coming), Oracle never offers any raises. You will be stuck at that salary rate for a 1 year or 30 years (given you aren't laidoff).

I suspect more layoffs are coming. Oracle isn't an innovative company, it's the king of acquisitions and the cloud market share belongs to Microsoft and Amazon.

Good luck.

Most folks on this forum are disgruntled. Read glassdoor reviews and make your choice. Oracle is big, many groups s uck - some are good.

Good luck

Depends on the business unit. Really, they are given leeway to be fairly independent in how they handle things.

If you want a generality, though, "no".
