Modest raise or better work atmosphere? What would you choose?

Pay raise would mean a lot to me, but honestly, if someone asked me if I wanted a little raise or a better work atmosphere, I would choose a better work atmosphere. After work, I am so tired and under so much stress that I clearly doubt that some small amount of money could compensate me. Moreover, I am afraid of the raise, because what often comes along is more responsibility and even bigger drill.

@2zoj Your post reminded me of my time with Meijer (aka Meijer Thrifty Acres) in the Midwest in a previous life. We were unionized with a very c-appy union. The union contract would come up every 3 years (I believe). The old timers who were capped in their pay would always vote yes because it would give them more money. That's all they cared about.

The flip side is that the new contract would always lower the starting rate of new hires. It was so bad, we couldn't keep the new hires more than a few weeks. Then the old timers would be constantly b!tching about not getting enough quality help. So they got their money at the cost of no one wanting to work there and then they would have to pick up the slack from the lack of new hires.

  1. S. I spent 10 years at Walmart. I left in 2017 for greener pastures.

If this proposal was "real world", and you chose a better work atmosphere, how long do you think it would last?

I'll take the raise. I'm use to the c-appy work atmosphere, I can deal. This isn't my life , just my job. More money is always my goal.

As a manager I would forego my raise and bonus' if it significantly raised the headcount. Having more people in each area lifts the burden, creates better morale and lessens the dependency on key associates. It be easier to manage, better for the associates and better for the members.

I agree a raise would be more responsible but I do not think they would keep there word on a better work places. It would gradually go back to the same old same log or worse.
