Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

DEI continues to be an utter circus

Through a combination of layoffs, and fostering an extremely hostile culture, the new head of DEI has managed to get rid of the entire team he inherited.

Now I’m not suggesting the previous head of DEI picked an all-star squad, but surely some of them were worth keeping?!

Anyone have any idea what the ‘strategy’ here is supposed to be?

Clearly no one did a background check on JL. He has a history of discrimination and SH in the workplace. Save yourself!

omg JL is taking a leaf out of JS’s book and writing his own posts here. Sad.

Are any of you actually currently on the DEI team? Because I am… joined in 2021, worked for JS, currently report into JL. Everyone knows JS was a terrible manager. JS would be the first to admit it and it led to a toxic team culture and horrible work experience for most of us. Meanwhile I’ve never felt so supported by a manager than I have with JL. He’s FAR from perfect. He travels too much, has too much on his plate, and still needs to figure this place out but at least he knows what he’s doing and seems to genuinely care. I also don’t miss the folks he got rid of in his early days. Sorry not sorry. The team is in a way better place now and I actually enjoy working here again.

PR speaking at LWT! Her LinkedIN post promoting her participation is humorous. How do you say something and nothing at the same time? Come on MM, aren’t you embarrassed? Is this really who you want representing the Swoosh? A washed up nobody?

Your so called identity or mental illness should not provide you with any sort of advantage against the average sane person.

I agree that PR speaking at LWT is so insanely tone deaf. Not LGBTQ. Definitely not an ally.

Literally zero charisma. Completely inauthentic. Awful human being.

Nike's approach to DEI is such a facade and a joke. How about the clueless, non diverse, non-ally, head of TA speaking at Lesbians Who Tech this week? As someone who identifies LGBTQIA+, i am INSULTED to have this person speak this this audience about anything human centered. She couldn't be farther from being human centric and knows NOTHING about tech. WHAT A JOKE.

"Nike is reimagining the future at the intersection of tech and sport, and how our uniquely-NIKE programs are fostering future talent and empowering teammates to become their best selves. With human-centered experiences at the forefront of our non-traditional technology approach, our teams are transforming our enterprise and serving athletes* through the power of technology innovation."

Just when you thought DEI at NIke couldn't get worse. I hate to admit it, but this guy might just be worse than JS. Many people on the team are afraid for thier jobs and expereincing the impact of this toxic envrionment, but are afraid to come forward due to retaliation.

The leader of DEI does not embody equity and inclusion. JL is not a humble person and other than going to speaking engagements and events I’m not sure what JL actually does. He is fake AF. The DEI team is full of amazing people who care deeply about DEI and they deserve a leader that matches their energy and impact. Not one that takes the credit.

Definitely under 12 months - if the full RTO mandate is true, he’s not going to relocate his family from SF and will get real bored of flying twice a week…

(is he as mean to his family as he is to everyone else?!)

Over / under on his tenure, 12 months? I'll take the under.

Glad you asked, I have a great example for you…

JL had asked folks to come into the office more regularly so that we could “carry Nike’s culture,” in his words. I lived in Portland so that wasn’t a problem for me, although for others who had received permission to work in other locations, it was cruel to ask them to change their working locations after they’d been given permission to move from previous leaders.

But that’s not even what bothered me the most. I asked him for 5 minutes of his time while I was in the office…his response: Can you reach out to my admin to schedule the 5 min with her? I might have the time tomorrow.

I’m like well can you explain to me why you’re asking people to come into the office if not for the ability to have quick informal chats?

Crickets.

So literally everyone is saying that JL is ‘mean’ or ‘nasty’

How does that show up? Is it how he speaks to people? Curious for actual examples.

For the record not a single person has said anything good, at all, about him. Which also begs the question how do these people get hired?

Is one of the skills for being an exec at Nike to be a really awful human being? Is there a special test they do at VP level to see how callous you can be?

The entire concept of DEI is a sh-t show....so many companies, schools, governments so much worse off once people started hiring DEI management staff....

JS wasn’t humane, he cleaned house with his promo too. At least with those that didn’t look/act like him. But yes MM is on #7 (or is it 8 now?) in the past 6 years. And somehow she’s still here cashing her millions.

It really is a s**t show. I worked under 3 DEI leaders at Nike and I honestly can’t tell you how happy I am to be done. JL has to be hands down one of the nastiest people I’ve ever interacted with. JS wasn’t my favorite, but at least he was humane in his approach.

Whatever the new plan, I couldn’t imagine ruining my personal external brand the way JL is doing. But hey, I’m just waiting for the time when MM inevitably chews him up and spits him up like she’s done every other DEI leader. 🍿
