Thread regarding UnitedHealth Group Inc. layoffs

I can also confirm that UnitedHealth Group (UHC & Optum) will be laying off employees ( Aka Reduction in Force or RIF) on Thursday, 02-06-20.

Not a coincidence this is right before RRP. Some employees are on quarterly or monthly compensation/bonus as well. UHG had a mass lay-off in October 2019. They are laying off employees that are high performers (make too much money in that grade level) and low performers. So if you’re mediocre you might be safe. They are eliminating entire departments. Many of the eliminated jobs are being off-shored to Ireland, India & the Philippines. The rest of the eliminated jobs will be split between the remaining employees so you will work longer hours. If you make it past this lay-off I would recommend to update your resume and get out ASAP. I cannot give your exact numbers but October 2019 was 10% of the workforce. Some leaders this round will not have to lay any employees off through attrition (not replacing employees who quit or moved over to another position within the company.) This round could be as high as 15% of the workforce. UHG likes to lay-off aka RIF in waves so the numbers are not so high. The layoffs never make the news because you receive a lump sum severance package and must sign a confidentiality agreement. Good luck to all!

Morale in my department at UHC E&I is extremely low. Everyone is worried about about being let go this week.

Unfortunately, I think C&S is going to be impacted, if not this month than next. It definitely feels like there is something up, I really wish I was just being paranoid, but the signs aren’t good. It feels like they are assessing areas and making decisions on personnel. I know this isn’t helpful information, I wish I had concrete info I could share. Everyone in my office feels vulnerable. The only positive is that I would rather have a suspicion that this was coming instead of being completely caught off guard.

@4ycp+13imZn0V - Most likely E&I will be hit again. They are losing renewals and new business. The Q4 financials were really bad and it's been a steady downward trend since Q1 last year.

@4mvc+13imZn0V - Asking how you spend your day is a neon sign they're making evaluations about who to keep and who to let go. There will be layoffs in your area. Make a game plan. Gather your contacts, projects and other things you'd want to have with you if you're let go. Plan for the worse and hope for the best. The severance package isn't great and benefits are only covered through the end of the month they let you go.

As bad as it feels to dump stuff off on your team members, uhc really doesn't care about you or value you. If they did, they wouldn't keep doing layoff, cutting bonuses, reducing espp contributions, etc. Whether you end up staying or being let go, take these layoffs as a sign to update your resume and start job hunting. The ship is sinking!

@3ify+13imZn0V - That's exactly what happened to me and my former team. We heard about the layoff rumors but no one really knew when it was coming or who would be impacted. My manager only found out 30 minutes ahead of time that his manager and 5 other people on the team were being let go.

We all knew our fate when a 15 min meeting showed up on our calendars after we got in the office that morning. I was first and my teammates all had a 15 min meetings scheduled right after mine. The layoff meeting was held in a random conference room and all the layoff meetings were done before 10 am. We went to the bar for lunch.

Our manager asked us to provide an outline of how we spend our days. He said it was just to “evaluate” workloads, um, ok, sure. We’ll go with that. Thinking I should maybe spend my days polishing up the res and applying for jobs outside the company. Unfortunately, tho, the work doesn’t stop, if I don’t do my part, my co-workers are the ones who suffer. I don’t want to do that to my team members in case they are kept. It will be hard work to pick up projects where someone left off without a proper transition.

Jordan- maybe this will make you feel better... if this layoff is as hard/deep as rumor has it, chances are your immediate supervisor doesn't even know yet. Could be that they are just as concerned as you and reading these posts. My immediate supervisor had no idea her entire team was moved or laid off until the morning of.. and she herself was laid off. She had 15 minutes sto compose herself before calling her reports and giving them their fate.

I can't confirm, but now the grapevine rumor I heard last week makes sense. Supposedly 16 more FTEs from M&R reconsideration will be transferred from that area to UMR. That will leave approximately 11 Americans left in that dept, while the 45 Manila nurses will keep their jobs. Minimal American staff will remain to cover the 30% of claims that have restrictions against off shore reviews. Any accounts that do not have off shore restrictions will be managed by Manila nurses. It technically is not a layoff, but it sort of is because the choice is accept the transfer or quit. 2 weeks ago 15 FTEs in reconsideration were transferred to E&I department. I suspect when that dept finally gets caught up and Manila is ramped up on their training for E&I, American staff from that dept will likely get laid off. cheap offshore labor is the key to UHG's savings strategies.

FACT: you must be employed at the time RRP is paid out. If you are given notice on 2/6/20 and your last day of employment is 2/20/20 you WILL NOT get RRP that is paid on 2/21/20. YOU ARE NOT AN EMPLOYEE AT THE TIME OF PAYOUT!

Stopping spreading false info.

I was a level 28 with uhc for almost 5 years and got 6 weeks of severance pay. It was given out in a lump sum and taxed at the ridiculous rate of 28%. And they sure take their sweet time to get the severance to you....it took over 5 weeks get it.

Anyone employed as of 1/1/2020 would be paid out earned RRP as part of their severance. Your comment makes me think you don’t know as much as you think you may. Please share only facts, not conspiracies.

The 10% reduction in staff is accurate. Each leader has been given that target at the beginning of the year since 2017. I was forced to do layoffs in 2017, but thankfully in 2018 and 2019 I had enough attrition (which I couldn’t backfill) to not do layoffs. The timing is determined by higher ups and most managers don’t find about layoffs till right before it happens. I am part of UHC

I believe there will be layoff again. What s—s is UHC made how many billions after operating expenses? I know RFP and raises will be lower than last year, yet UHC made more money.

I have worked for other insurance companies and in no way is UHC on par with salary, raises, and bonuses. I have been applying out and consulting for companies looking for the best insurance option for their employees and UHC is not it and never will be. I have worked in almost every area of this company and it is shady.

There’s NO WAY that many people were laid off without that making the news. Don’t believe the OP. On the other hand, if a democrat wins the presidency, 100% will be laid off and that WILL make the news.

I truly feel sorry for the people who gave 150% and got a swift kick in the underside. Now for some Karma. This is a healthcare Company with numerous people trained in public health. Coronavirus has arrived. There are now deaths in the Philippines, India, China and Malaysia. Entire provinces are being shut down. Good luck moving your work to these areas. There is a double whammy. When they repatriate the jobs to the US, they will need to pay a premium. Management at its Very Finest. These are the Biggest Bunch of Imbeciles Anywhere!

If you or your manager has been asked to make a list of the 3-5 key things you do and what percentage of your time each week is used for doing these things , then they are evaluating job roles in your department and the number of people that are needed to do these things. They were most likely asked to do this around the holidays or early January as part of the 2020 budget planning process and not as a part of MAP/common review.

10% of employees were laid off from UHC in October. There wasn't a lot of publicity about it because UHC stayed under the state thresholds which would have required it to be classified as a mass layoff. A lot of the eliminated positions were considered open FTE positions and also from recently acquired companies because of so called job redundancies. I saw the severance list for E&I and over 60 people at corporate were let go–mainly middle management with a couple of VP's and directors thrown in. Optum let go around 1400 people on December 4th. I'm not as familiar with that org so I don't know which groups were hit with that layoff. There is another round coming soon. Those C level execs need to have bigger bonuses this year and buy more companies. Prepare yourself for the worst and hope for the best.

OP makes no sense. Says 10% in October then goes on to say they lay off small to avoid news, lol
Apparently doesn't know how WARN works and the requirements to meet WARN. Also, getting a severance package and signing a NDA have nothing to do with the news lol Whole OP is false.
