Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Can't even imagine my 20th anniversary here

Some workers stay put here for decades. - What is it, loyalty or lack of ambition to make greater progress in their career? Unless I could achieve some progressive growth in a company, I would not stay anywhere longer than 5 years.

What kept me here this long was the vacation time plus I was getting tier 2 engineer pay working as a team leader in tier 1. Call it lack of ambition too but why leave when I am getting paid good and looking good when the majority of people around me make me look good with how d-mb they are

Tons of vacation time, which I highly value. And the other benefits are great too.

You really dont have to imagine. Just work as much as the company want you to and take jobs no one else wants and bo-m you’ll be there and will try to figure out what happened.

Telecom is dead. If you are go getter, change industries. If not, then figure out a way to avoid layoffs and keep pace with inflation. I wouldn't touch any kind of individual contributor engineering roles. I would aim for management where you can BS your way up the pay grades and do very little real work.

Musk buying VZ would be hilarious. I can see him in Basking Ridge now tearing down the gyms, yoga rooms, posh lunch buffets, and all the other amenities they have.

Look at anyone longer than 8 years that’s never been promoted, doing the same job. These people couldn’t get hired for half their pay anywhere else. Elon needs to buy Verizon next

A game in life. And life is not always fair. Life is not always a level playing field. Clearly, it used to be who you know and not what you know.

30 yr wireless guy here. Was a Corp Accts Mgr but took myself off the director track when I realized I didnt respect the people leading. Have moved around in individual contributor roles b/c the grass is not always greener. Survived a layoff 9 yrs ago when a friend threw a life raft. The short answer is if you can do the job and stay off the radar, you can have a financially rewarding career and enjoy life.

Worked at Verizon 6 years and finished two master's degrees, PMP, CSM, CLSSMBB, CompTIA A+, Network, and Security all on Verizon's dime. When I wouldn't get through the selection process for the internal interviews I left the company. A lot can be said for taking everything you can and doing better for yourself elsewhere.

Some employees who have tenure have not been in the same position but moved around over time building a career as they grew their knowledge and skills. That is not lack of ambition. For some employees having a job that they know was needed as they raised families. I had quite a few co-workers who had kids with special needs so having a constant job in the same position caused them less stress then moving around and having the learn new things. It was what they needed to navigate their lives at that time. Everyone needs to do what works for them and if it is moving around companies then fine but not everyone likes that or is at a place in life where that works.
