Thread regarding Fidelity Investments layoffs

how does the ranking process work for bonus?

So do you all the managers sit around a table and literally rank people? any insight into how this process works?

To get an EP you need to butter your boss a little, but also your boss' boss. When your boss puts down that you deserve an EP, he has to justify that to his manager. His boss being familiar with who you are and what you do will ease that process, especially if you present yourself as a problem solver to him (the boss' boss). Likewise, if your boss does not put you forth for an EP, but your boss' boss likes you, he will ask him why he did not nominate you and encourage him to do so.

Source: two friends on a team doing roughly the same workload, extrovert friend who regularly spoke with the manager's manager got an EP despite their direct manager not nominating. Introvert friend of slightly higher technical acumen and working on more visible projects received an SP.

For full disclosure, I am not on their team. I received an SP and am pleased with my evaluation.

To get an “E” or a promotion, you should either be a “buzzsaw” and chew threw projects or creatively forge new ground on team expanding projects. You know if you are not in these categories. Don’t deceive yourself

@3xpn+1jLzhmmu I hear ya, but I've had 11 managers in the last 10 years. I cannot keep thinking that my manager thru Apr-Sept is going to be the same manager thru Dec. Nuts but so f-n true. For real, how can anyone ever expect to get promoted in place if they always have a "new" manager every 9 months. ridiculous. Been going on for a f-n decade!!!!!

You own your career. Don't wait for a manager to give a promotion. Earn your promotion by 1. Working hard and distant yourself from others. 2. Applying for higher positions. 3. Apply for external job. All three cases you will get what you want be happy.

An E?? An E is good/average. A high performing SP is harder to get. If you’re not getting Es and think it’s super hard, yikes.

@2fho+1jLzhmmu Do not kid yourself. The B. S. has been around a long time, goes on today and will continue long past the time you leave. The only way to get an E or promotion is to either be WAY better than everyone on your team or kiss a lot of rear end.

Well if you were to get a promotion now, your manager can't tell you yet. They probably don't have it confirmed anyway. And..now is not the time to confront at your manager. The time to lay the groundwork is April-Sep. I am sure it felt great ... but your manager is your ticket to promotion. Like them or not, warranted or not, if you want to stay in any team and get promoted, you have to work with your manager. The other option is to forever jump ship and get promoted that way. In fact this is how most people move ahead at fidelity.

I told my manager to quit the bullsh-t and give me a promotion and to tell the "higher ups that I said to 'quit the bullsh-t'. Otherwise I'm applying elsewhere and done with the bullsh-t. We'll see how it goes, but it felt great to tell the management to quit the bullsh-t.

And some Managers are more rabid about defending E’s than others, since it will reflect more positively on them to have an E or two on their team. It’s all about their scorecards, not necessarily rewarding the right folks. I’m not complaining, just been around a long time.

Individual managers rank their people according to the quota dictated from HR. Lists are then combined and managers meet to see overall ratings. If there are outliers - e.g. too high when others think that is seriously flawed or too low when it could be higher, those are corrected. Mostly the talking is about defending the Es. No one cares about the bulk of S.
